    Paradise - Jamal Oliver-Byas

    Prologue

With school starting tomorrow I must be prepared for anything.

My name is October James. I’m 17 years old and I'm about to start my senior year at my new school.

The school is called August Martin High School. As I heard it was a tough school from some of the kids in my house.

I came to this school to leave my past behind me and start off fresh. I don’t want to bring up that story. It is a horrible story.

Later that night I was asleep early for school.

    The new beginning

Iwaited for the bus in front of my house. My story you may ask? I don’t have one unless if you count my past, but it won’t be told.

The school bus stops in front of my house. The door opens, and I walked on.

I sat down in an empty seat.

The bus starts moving when a girl sits next to me.

Hi. Are you new here? The girl asked me.

Yes. I’ve moved here over the summer. I replied.

The girl introduced herself. Her name was Carly Hull.

I’m October James. I told her.

    Carly shook my hand.

I’m so glad that you’re here. Carly said smiling shyly.

Me too. I heard August Martin High School was the best school. I answered.

Carly had a puzzled look on her face.

    Not really October. Carly states.

Why wouldn’t August Martin be the best school? I exclaimed.

Once when Carly was about to tell the story a water bottle was thrown into my lap. The water spills everywhere in my lap.

A group of kids laughs from the back of the bus.

Fresh Meat season. A kid shouts from the back of the bus.

Carly looks at the spot on my jeans.

October, you can’t walk into the school like that. We have orientation today. Carly informed.

Carly hands me a towel from her bag.

I patted my jeans dry and then handed the towel back to Carly.

You keep it. You may need it in the future. Carly said.

    Thanks Carly. I replied.

Then the bus stops at the place that I call it...School.

    August Martin High School

The kids load off the buses and plies into the auditorium.

Carly and I sat in the empty seats in the middle of the auditorium.

What’s going on? I asked Carly.

Mr. Summers is going to give a welcome speech. He’s our principal. Carly replied.

Mr. Summers walks to the microphone. Mr. Summers is like a hairy dude with his beard and mustache. He’s also very short for his size.

Good morning students. I hope that you had a lovely summer. Our guest of honor will be here shortly- Mr. Summers starts.

What does he mean by ‘guest of honor’? I asked Carly.

Someone new came to our school. Carly replied.

Without further ado I present the special education kids to the stage. Mr. Summers says.

Eight kids walked onto the stage. One kid walks to the microphone.

My name is Becky and I prefer to be called Ma’am by all of you. Becky stated.

I don’t believe this! She expects us to be loyal to her. Carly exclaimed.

    I don’t know Carly. I think she’s kind of cute. I mumbled.

What did you say October? Carly asked.

I said ‘I agree with you.’ I replied.

We’re being watched by people that are mentally retarded. The kid behind me said sarcastically.

    The crowd erupts into laughter.

You have a month of detention. Becky states.

    The crowd stops laughing.

Good. You are excused to your first period class. Scram! Becky exclaimed.

    The auditorium quickly empties.

That moment I was in love with Becky.

    Creative Writing

By the time, I shut my locker I was late for first period.

My class was on the other side of the school. I had Creative Writing.

I was walking to class until I saw students leaving a classroom.

It was Becky's Classroom. It looked like they were heading to class.

When they were out of sight I peeked into the window of the classroom.

She has three periods that are the same as mine. Creative Writing, Gym, and Lunch.

I rushed to catch up with them.

I WALKED INTO MY FIRST period class.

Sir. Do you have a late pass? The Creative Writing Teacher asked me.

I didn’t know what to say. I try to answer, but it came out as a mumble.

It’s okay. It’s the first day. Please find a seat. The Creative Writing Teacher says to me.

I sat in the back of the classroom.
