About this ebook
The Illari is an elite force that exists to protect the king. After a plot to have the king murdered succeeds, the Illari is forced into exile. But before the king died, he told them about a place called Ntswanatsatsi, where the line between life and death is blurred, where reality and fantasy are one, where people could, possibly, be brought back to life. They set out on a forbidden path to bring a fallen soldier back to life – if at all possible. But they were not expecting the risks that comes with it, for what stands in their way is an army of Thokolosi, creatures no mortal has ever seen and lived to tell the tale for their sole purpose is to protect Ntswanatsatsi. Even before they get there, they have to survive the Forest Pits, where an ancient race of vile creatures that hunt and feed on people live.

CHAPTER 1
THE END
The day of the Oshun Festival had finally arrived. Every year, stretching as far back as ten thousand years, the day of the Oshun Festival took place on a blistering hot day, and this year was no exception.
Legend had it that the gods themselves were the first to celebrate the Oshun Festival. Legend had it that the gods created Idir, our beautiful world, during one of their spectacular Oshun festivities.
Sadly, Batho were not gods. As such, all Batho could do during their Oshun were to drink craft beer and slaughter hundreds of beasts.
But the real reason Batho celebrated the Oshun Festival was to conduct a ritual many kings feared; the Proclamation.
The Proclamation was a merciless tradition meant to determine if the king was still fit to rule. If he wasn’t, he had to commit suicide right there and then. On top of that, his eldest son as well as his closest advisors were bound by law to commit suicide along with the king in order to renew the government altogether.
The day of the Oshun Festival had finally arrived. King Afin was a revered king and well-respected. So much so that his subjects were convinced he would rule until his death. Even he thought so as well.
King Afin was a just and fair man whom under his rule, the mighty country of Lehae had seen unprecedented peace and prosperity. So much peace that some people wanted him dead. The irony. To them, his being peaceful screamed weakness.
The day of the Oshun Festival had finally arrived. But there was something strangely odd about this one. Something just did not feel right. Everyone seemed to be oblivious to this eerie atmosphere. Everyone but the Illari.
The Illari were an elite group made up of any number requested by the king to be his loyal guard. King Afin had only five Illari but no enemy in Hae would ever get within spitting distance of him.King Afin’s Illari were made up of Ilorin, Ilan, Ilara, Iruyo and Ifeire.
The day of the Oshun Festival had finally arrived. Ilorin was immediately suspicious when she woke up to news that a new Oracle was to perform the Proclamation. As the Illari’s leader, her opinion mattered more than most. So they rushed to King Afin’s side before the festivities began.
So what are you saying, Ilorin?
demanded King Afin.
Postpone the festival,
said Ilorin.
Postpone the Oshun Festival?
interjected King Afin. To when? The following year?
Sister, it’s too late for that,
said Ilara.
Listen to your baby sister, Ilorin,
said King Afin.
Something smells fishy about it,
proclaimed Ilorin. Oracles are always chosen a year in advance. How long is a year? Seventeen months.
What’s your point?
asked King Afin’s eldest son.
We were in accord for the past seventeen months, but they decide to change the Oracle exactly the day before the Proclamation? Why?
Ilorin makes a good case,
said Iruyo, nonchalantly.
Postpone it. I don’t trust them.
King Afin went quiet for a moment. Then he looked over at his son who shook his head.
Ilorin, listen to me,
said King Afin. Never in the history of Lehae has the Oshun Festival been postponed. I will not break a millennia of tradition just because the Oracle may deem me unfit to rule. I can’t do that.
Let it go, Ilorin,
said Ilan.
The room suddenly went quiet.
Ilorin slowly turned around to look at the one woman she despised with all her life energy.
What did you say?
The look on her face quickly reminded Ilan of her place in Ilorin’s heart.
Calm down, Ilorin,
said King Afin. She is right. You should let it go. The festival will go ahead as planned.
Ilorin’s eyes were a piercing menace locked onto Ilan.
Don’t ever address me again!
She didn’t mean it like that,
said Iruyo, trying to calm her down.
Set your differences aside for the sake of the festival,
said King Afin.
King Afin and his son were determined to get the Proclamation out of the way. Postponing it would be the same as a cancellation in the eyes of the people. Oshun was tradition. Oshun was rule of law. No matter the outcome. Ilorin had no other choice but to listen to her king.
The Illari were on high alert. Interestingly, Ilorin’s strained relationship with Ilan had never come in the way of their duties. They made sure of it.
As expected, by noon the king’s homestead was filled with townspeople and loud chatter. His palace was an intimidating architectural feat while his backyard could fill thousands.
There were performers from a multitude of faculties; musicians, actors, dancers, with their primary purpose being to entertain.
Meat and beer were the Oshun staples. People were
