CHAPTER ONE

Noises in the Mist

Cruz awoke with a start surprised to find he was not at home nor in his own bed. He was in the attic room of his Grandmother Diane’s large orchard home.

Both of his cousins were sleeping in a queen-sized bed next to his, separated only by a table that held a lamp for reading. Neither stirred an inch.

Couldn’t they hear it? A howling like no other. Cruz had heard wolves before, but the sounds coming from the night were not the high-pitched sounds he was used to, but low and loud. If he didn’t know better, he would have thought the sounds came from somewhere in the room. He looked around. The room was empty of any scary wolves about to pounce on unsuspecting boys.

Once out of bed, he tiptoed to the attic window. There was a deep mist engulfing the orchard. The wind was blowing like a kid at a birthday party, making sure to blow the candles out in one gust. There it was again. The low growl and howl. Cruz scampered back to
