Chapter 1: Introduction to Rural Living
This section of the book is for people who are not used to the rural life and need to choose both where to live as well as understand how their rural will be different from city life. This section is also a great resource to help long time rural residents choose where they want their new home to be. That initial move into a rural area can be the biggest expense of country living.
The Driving Disadvantage
The Importance of Having a Vehicle
Shopping, working, and visiting: all everyday activities requiring a reliable mode of transportation. In the country, a vehicle is the main link an individual has between their home and everything the house needs to run. Maintaining a job without transportation and living in a rural area would be nearly impossible since the majority of people in rural areas have either large or small farms which require hauling feed, hay, and straw.
Imagine carrying multiple grocery bags for over 2 hours. Most of the groceries in that situation would no longer be edible. The arms of the person hauling the groceries would be aching. However, groceries and other necessities still need to make it home. Rural life requires a vehicle.
Minimal Access to Public Transportation
School buses and paramedic services are the only forms of public transportation for small towns and those living in the woods. Even then, some rural homes need to drive their children to meet the school bus.
Larger towns might have a bus line, but it most likely it will only run on certain days and only make a couple stops. These bus lines might connect 1-3 large towns, but only if they are a small distance from each other.
Distance Between Towns
Small towns may be minutes apart by car, but that same distance could take upwards of 10 minutes to travel on foot. Also, the houses in the forests might have a 30 minute walk to reach one of the small towns. The roads in the small towns are paved, but many of the back roads
from the houses in the woods to town are made of dirt.
The larger towns can take 15 minutes to drive and hours to travel by foot. Walking these distances is not an issue if done for leisure, but if an individual is walking to a job or shopping, then these distances could be intolerable. These roads are paved and do connect to a highway. Walking on a highway is very dangerous and considered illegal in some states.
The Type of Vehicle Matters
Rural roads are usually not well maintained. These roads may get flooded or piled with snow. The vehicle chosen to for these areas must be dependable and
