Summary: Blake Heira, a Priest of the God of Justice, must find a murderer in an asylum.
Chapter 1
The body on the slab stared into Blake Heira’s soul. The man was younger than he looked yesterday without his threadbare rags.
This is my fault,
Blake said.
You couldn’t have known,
Devik Loanis said, putting his hand on Blake’s shoulder.
He told me he was in danger. He said someone was going to kill him.
He accosted you on the street and talked like a madman. What were you supposed to do?
I was supposed to protect him.
You’re an Eye of Law,
Devik said. You have responsibilities.
I’m a member of the Order,
Blake spat, trying to keep his voice from breaking. It’s our duty to protect the citizens of Myos.
There’s nothing you can do about this, now. You have responsibilities.
Blake nodded, slowly. Responsibilities. He looked at Devik.
You can’t be serious. You think this is murder? There isn’t a mark on him!
He’s dead, Devik. Look at him. He can’t be fifty.
It could have been the heat. It happens all the time, especially to the homeless.
They found him this morning.
Maybe he died yesterday.
He was still stiff. He couldn’t have died in the heat of the day.
No signs of struggle, no marks on his neck, no bruising, no stab wounds.
Let me check for other factors.
Blake pulled out his divining rod, the focus he used to cast his spells. He pulled magic from the area around him, controlling it with a series of complicated gestures and words, fueled it with his own energy, then released the spell. Power rushed into his eyes. Individual hair rushed into focus as Reveal Details enhanced his sight.
He took his time going over the body, looking for pinpricks, evidence of poison, anything that showed what killed the man. There were no obvious signs. He let the spell end.
Can we let this go?
Not yet. I want to check one more thing.
Pulling power again, Blake casted Analyze Magic. The tapestry of magic flooded over him. Looking past the blue of his own Divination magic, he saw deep purple with shimmering gold surrounding the head. Layered under it was a hazy grey. There was nothing else around the body.
He’s been attacked magically,
Blake said, letting his spell end.
Devik looked between Blake and the body.
Who would attack a homeless man with magic?
Two people, actually, or one person with two different schools of magic. Oneiromancy and Psionics.
I’m not a mage, Heira,
Devik bristled. That’s why I have you.
Oneiromancy deals with sleep, dreams, and the like. Psionics is magic of the mind.
They sound related.
Only in effect. They work on completely different principles.
"So,
