    CHAPTER 1

She rubbed the surface of her phone with the arm of her blue collar jersey. The bump of her pregnancy started showing she was carrying a living seed. Hi, Is Thabo there? she asked. Hold on let me call him, Thabo’s sister answered. She was playing candy crush on Thabo’s phone when it cried.

Thabo, Thabo, nanku mfazi wakho... she yelled to his brother invading his bedroom. Yey wena what do you want? he mumbled chewing apple like an old crook, or maybe he was a crook. Borrow me once you’re done with it the sister pleaded. Thabo left talking with his preggy on the phone.

I pulled the zip of the bag up, closed the bag so I could leave for school. I left the house through the rusty gate of my grandmother’s home. Ruffy barked at the guy who walked by following him up the road. He was strange though wearing in our school uniform. Voersek, He yelled at Ruffy, hurrying away down the dusty road. I stood on the gate waiting for Thabo. I could have called Ruffy off him but he was disrespecting my dog. He picked up speed dusting his troujsers’ bottom.

I looked at him strangely, Thabo noticed. While wiggling my hands in my pockets, Who’s that guy Thabo asked pointing him with the apple in his hand. He just called my dog off yow I cried looking at the guy. Nzomfundisa sfundo myege, he promised. Hey you two go to school, my grandmother yelled with the broom slowly walking towards the gate. I listened to Thabo complain while we walked on.

I waited long on my desk for lunch, until the bell rang. Flipping lunch break, We walked behind the shorts skirts. The girls wiggled as we walked separated way to lavatories. He spoke about their short skirt, how he...

Stop right there nigga, I wish I could have said this but it doesn’t matter. As we walked on the lavatories, all along I’ve been inspecting his pregnant girlfriend on the other side of the senior classes from a distance. I knew she longed for his attention so bad. I knew that Thabo cares about her but he will never show it in any case for sure, something that lesego longed in him.

Once everyone was done helping themselves, few people remained at the toilets. They remain to socialize and smoke. Thabo went to the guy who was smoking besides the door. I was watching a stain on the basin when the guy asked told me Thabo said in will find him outside.

I unzipped, and helped myself directly on the pit until Thabo kicked the door. I messed on the seat. Come and see this, you won’t believe your eyes, Thabo forced his smile. Hold on I am done, I walked out zipping. He hanged his hand on my shoulders. I thought you were outside, I was about to wash my hands on the basin but he pulled me towards the door. There is no time for that lets go he pulled me. What is it? I asked.

Patience buddy, um sure that you gonna love this, he said with excitement in his voice.

We went to the back of toilets, where he shown me a guy urinating against the wall.

Check out that guy. Do you remember anything? he stood behind as he pointed him. Damn man it’s that punk just called off Ruffy this morning, I examined the guy. Yeah that’s our pimp, he said. He ran to him pushed him against the wall. Who the f*ck are you punk? he pointed his finger on his forehead.

Talk nigga! I shouted walking toward him. Thabo pressed him against the wall with his collars roughly. You not from around here are you, huh punk. Come on you can talk! Thabo teased the guy. The guy closed his eyes and forced a cry and his angered face spoke otherwise. Yow Jay go check out, a little bit just a lookout, I want to cut this punk I watched him take out his pocket knife while I ran for a look out in case any teacher comes along or other student who might witness our deed and voice to the schoolmaster.

    CHAPTER 2

Thabo ran his hand through the guy’s pockets. He took his money and phone. Hoof, hoof. Voersek wena! Thabo threatened the guy. I laughed watching the guy ran off distressly. Thabo calculated all the money he got from the guy and threw the money between my hands.

I was counting the money thabo took from the guy, and then he took out a box of cigarettes and matchbox. I watched him surprisingly puff out smoke like a veteran. What you looking at? he beamed blowing puff of cigarette in the air. And since when did you start smoking? I questioned. It’s been a while now. Oh you want to judge me now, he pointed with a burned cigarette. Whatever bra, I stuffed the money away.

I am just going through some stuff right now. I think about my chick a lot and that baby bro. I am young for this shit nigga. Thabo stressed. How could you have seen that when you were horny man I teased. He just looked at me and continued to puffing and inhaled more. If only you knew he puffed largely. Yeah I am glad that I don’t know much about that department look at you now I teased. But you will he said.

He threw the box to me. I caught it from midair. Try them dog he insisted. I wanted to know how it felt. How it feels when the smoke reach your lungs. I wanted to be cool like him. Jimmy approached us and sweetened us with his lies as he always does. He insisted on the boxes I had. They conversed while I froze in a pit of decision making. Njabulo and his friends walked to us, they puffed even more and distributed the other boxes they came to us with amongst his friends.

I lit too and burned my prints with first attempt. I coughed on my first puff. Thabo laughed. I struggled until I puffed like them. Njabulo took out the weed from his pocket. He exposed to the rest of the crew. No boys will see that after school" they left with disappointment while Thabo and I remained behind. I struggled with the piece that was left between my fingers. How I struggled holding the piece...it fell on the grassy ground. I could see the other pupils ran to classes.

Let it on he insisted. Yeah! I laughed knowing what could happened. We left and a bit of smoke erected behind us from the ground. All the scholars ran to classes, but thabo insisted we shouldn’t run. I tired too, he stopped. Do you see the principal he asked. No I replied. Dankie saan, now we gonna go and buy sandwiches he walked. Right then! I followed behind.

The hawkers were instructed not to sell for pupils after the break then again they did so. Every student was in their respective classes besides the class on the corner, where there was never a teacher in there. We found Miss Mogale once we arrived from the hawkers waiting for us in our classroom. She commenced her arithmetic lesson right away.

She stood on the board with her funny legs. She expressed herself with surprise when Thabo and I entered the class and took a sit on our desk. Hey, you up to no good kids come here After a short observation she commanded. Thabo remained seated. I went up front. And you? she pointed with the chalk between her fingers. Thabo stood and walked slowly. I laughed to myself. Stand right there she continued with her class
