    André Malraux (1901-1976) was a French writer and politician. He was a staunch anti-fascist, and fought on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War, before joining the Resistance during the Second World War. He was a close friend of Charles de Gaulle, and was Minister of Cultural Affairs in his government from 1959 to 1969.

    He wrote novels such as Man’s Fate (1933) and Man’s Hope (an autobiographical novel based on his experiences during the Spanish Civil War, 1937), political essays, art criticism and a two-part autobiography, comprising Antimemoirs
