About this ebook

Finally, a friendly book to read on the globalization of markets with an Aha moment!

Will you go out into the world market and cold call chambers of commerce, businesses, and economic development institutions, for three years?

Is finding a solution to economic development your passion? What are the things that are working and not working in attracting investment, developing trade relationship and creating value for SME’s worldwide?

When was the last time you fully invested your time, resources and education to really understand what is happening in the world market?

Those are some of the conversational issues that Aldous, had with various business executives worldwide. Those were also the issues that Aldous pondered on day in and day out, when he isn’t trying to please his dog, Bella.

Aldous Mina, not only wrote about his observations and conversations, he lived many of his interpretation of the globalization of markets. Aldous is well known in providing solutions that are outside the box way of thinking. Al’s passion from a young age of thirteen was in the international markets which is probably not the most common hobby there is, but he knew from then on that he would be a change agent to market development.

The solutions may seem deceptively simple and many may say it has been done in the past. Though it may be the case, if not done correctly, timing is off, and people implementing not inspired, none of it would come into fruition. Many have failed and millions lost in global trade.

Having a standard operating procedure in market development does not mean executives from developed countries should abandon emerging and frontier market potential when things get tough.

Likewise, not having funding to attract investment from developed countries into developing markets should not deter a diplomat to engage decision makers. The name of the new world market game is creativity, social media utilization and tons of national grit in an international arena.

Aldous, also innovated and tried out many of his fundamental key economic development principles, like working with a regional chamber of commerce in one country should be the first thing on the mind of those looking to diversify their international portfolio.

Considering putting an office in the second or third largest city of emerging and frontier markets rather than within the capital, and why is it important to work with the local airport authority when considering a market entry approach.

So, whether you are an executive, an educator, or the typical guy or gal bored of the Republican and Democrat head banging or lack of minds thereof. Read this book to un-whine and develop an optimistic take on the new world market environment. It is your TRUE future~

    Afterword

First and foremost, this book is dedicated to those who never quit in their aspiration to develop academically, professionally and in global awareness. I would like to also give thanks to those individuals in the public, and private sectors and academia, in their unwavering quest to design this world to be a better place for the next generation. I am truly humbled by the many people who never stopped teaching me new approaches to my professional and private life. Moreover, to my family, I always enjoy our small talks, straight to the point. I ask that you please do not limit it to texting.

This project would not have come into fruition, if it were not for the desire of Ms. Morgan Dunwoody, Ms. Kymberly Krogh, served as independent editors and Mr. Vasile Vancea, was the creative designers of the book cover: all have selflessly given their time, talent and creativity to make this book project a reality. Thank you for putting up with my candidness and passion to deliver the rawness form of real world market assessment outside the norms of conventional storytelling. Furthermore, thanks to Mr. Joe Robinson, a juggernaut in the field of global business. I am a proud to call you my mentor, friend, and YMCA exercise buddy. Thank you as well to my friends in the diplomatic corps for your interesting stories and adventures. I would also like to thank the institutions who participated in this no holds bar market analysis so others may learn and help facilitate dialog among stake holders and decision makers.

This book is also dedicated to those that created various social media platforms to help us all learn about each other as members of the world community. I hope that our desires to learn about each other’s way of life, tradition, culture, norms, aspirations, and joys would be reasons for us to annihilate the fear of people who do not think, look, and act like us. The world has truly changed and so have the people living in it; we have become better people in ALL sense of the word.

There are so many names to mention in this short remark, but if, I was able to provoke your thought and challenge you, thank you for allowing me to do so. Special thanks to my friends who have never left my side, and keep on carrying on when the going gets tough, we are definitely moving forward.

Lastly, thank you to those who kept my spirit, both religiously and physically fit to persevere in unknown territories. Perhaps, I persevered because people gave me a chance to be me, and allowed me to be a part of their lives, organizations, communities, and be able to be a part of the fellowship, which is a true honor for me.

So, this book is my second and hopefully not the last, unless my dog Bella, decides to delete my next manuscript off of my computer. Again, I am forever grateful to you, and those people who have inspired me to pen this book as a non-classical writer.

    Yours,

    Al Mina

Barbecue Markets And the Secret Economic Sauce of the New World Market~

This book was written not to alarm people or even promote market discord. The point for this book is to present issues that tend to hinder organizations from fully understanding the root causes of preventable organizational behavior in dealing with the new world market environment. Solutions can only be developed once we truly understand subtle issues before turning into an all-out problem.

Barbecue (informally barbeque, BBQ or barby/barbies) is both a cooking method and an apparatus. The generally accepted differences between barbecuing and grilling are cooking durations and the types of heat used. Grilling is typically done quickly over moderate-to-high direct heat that produces little smoke. Whereas barbecuing is done slowly over low, indirect heat, and the food is flavored by the smoking process.

Source Wikipedia, because I like the analogy (Period)

Let us reflect on this metaphor, the world market is sitting on one global market environment: the grill. Markets in Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Africa share the same skewer on their trading relationships.

For example, the North American Free Trade Agreement including the countries of Mexico, USA, and Canada are all on one stake.

They are all going through a slow process of stagnation in economic development, or overly cooked on one end of the stick and underdone on the other end. This is the precept of the title Barbecue Markets. This precept reflects upon the state of affairs of various markets as well as the process in getting to the stage where they are not very attractive to eat or enter as an investment destination, due to the state of their market.

I hope that you enjoy the parody created in my interpretation of the new market world…….Al

    Chapter 1

Pardon me, is that your market cooking?

    You Snooze, You Lose!

Here I am sitting in my room in Northeast Washington DC, going through a myriad of Federal Government Global Development Materials, International Business Consulting Catalogs, International None Profit Flyers, Global Investment Strategies Brochures, Feed the Hungry Paraphernalia and on and on. Where is that silver bullet that can help lift all boats from poverty, civil unrest, market instability, political turmoil, and global terrorism?

Is the picture of a foreigner operating in a war-torn country going to make a difference? Does a snapshot of a man helping plow the field influence a Westerner to want to learn more about the plight of people in Ethiopia? Will an image of a woman teaching in a class room in Honduras secure the support needed to keep that school open? Can a diplomat sway a foreign government official to change their corrupt ways?

This book is about perseverance in global markets. These chapters discuss the many ways improvement can happen if the person contributing is inspired to make a difference. The world is not perfect, and it will never be since people are imperfect. With this said, the challenges today are much easier to understand and resolve due to the tools which were unavailable in years past. We now have the tools to truly immerse ourselves into the lives of our neighbors, friends and counterparts in foreign countries via social media.

During the summer of 2016, there was a cook out bonanza all over the Virginia Beach area. I made my way back to Norfolk from Washington DC, and guess what I come across? A barbecue grill, yes folks, if you ever want to know what the future holds for the economy, simply enjoy a good cook out. Markets are all interconnected just like a stick of kabob. They are also slow cooking their economy and its ability to service debt and create wealth. Barbecue also tends to improve with your favorite sauce similar to countries investing their national assets to increase the potential of a certain industry. It also revolves around the flavoring of the sauce which is the tools a country utilizes to improve its foreign direct investments, job creations, labor ready work forces, and soft and hard infrastructure market mechanisms.

    Economic Detective Work:

This is happening in markets worldwide. Let me tell you what I’ve uncovered in a course of three years talking to various chambers of commerce in Europe and the United States. Plus, I will share what some of the diplomatic community is saying regarding the new age of social media in economic development. You will be fascinated by some of the things I have come across, from trade movement using social media to a European chamber of commerce institution that would rather do business with Russia and Asia than continue the tradition of the Western market world.

As a child, I was fascinated by various currencies. I collected them but was not very successful in keeping my bills and coins just like in the real world where money is fleeting at an ever-rapid speed. With this said, one thing that stands out in my memory as a kid was the Dinar, the Saudi Arabian currency that my dad gave me when he was working in the Middle East. The story is not so much about the currency itself or the Saudi Arabian economy. What I would like to reflect upon is the lasting impact my father’s gift had on me. Through my curiosity of the global markets, at that time, I questioned everything revolving around the currency and Saudi Arabia as a country.

It developed an unquenched curiosity that continues within me. I would like to point out, however, that people and children have collected currencies, stamps and, other memorabilia from around the world since the very beginning. What, however, ended up being an influence on me is much more profound, a sort of imagination building influence that made me want to look into the possibilities. What if I became so good at working in international markets that I would be able to have a career enabling me to travel the world and see the many changes that is happening first hand? These thoughts are what crossed my mind as a kid, and later on, I decided to major in international business at Liberty University.

As I embarked on my global market treasure hunting, not for material things, but for knowledge, I found a very interesting treasure. This sort of treasure had never been seen, heard of, or felt in the past among the developed and developing world. These are treasures in the evolution of the new market world, which are things that are happening today in market development that were not explored in the past or even considered due to a lack of resources and, at best, imagination.

I believe that a regular person should be well versed about the benefits of economic development and be able to utilize that knowledge to help influence their personal, professional, and community betterment aspirations. With this said, my goal is to help the common person learn and enjoy the power that they will eventually gain upon reading this book because they have a treasure that the rest of the world has yet to discover.

Why am I so thrilled to share what I have uncovered? Partly because economic development is my passion, but, most importantly, the quality of life for millions will greatly improve with the current resources that we now have at our fingertips. So, why are there markets out there that are struggling to gain footing in the new world market? Partly because they are unsure of the benefits of it; and, second, they simply resist change. When people resist improvements, progress tends to shy away from them.

    No horse in this race:

So, the contest dwindled down to two presidential candidates. For the Republican Corner is Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and on the other side is Mr. Donald Trump. Trump was an unlikely presidential candidate if you were to assess candidates back in 2005. Much has changed since 2005 when the book The World is Flat was published by one of my favorite authors Thomas Friedman. I met Mr. Friedman for the first time in 2011 across from the World Bank office and we ended up taking a picture together inside of a deli across the street.

Five years later we met for the second time when we passed each other at the US Patent Office Headquarters in Northern Virginia. But this time around, I was able to hand him my business card. I hope he kept it because I wanted him to look me up and maybe, one day, invite me out for coffee. Wishful thinking, at best, but oh, well! He has a wealth of information that I could learn from, and I am sure he would be intrigued by faceconomics, too.

What does the US election have to do with the world market, you may ask? The answer is: not a whole lot if we didn’t sell to the rest of the world and the US dollar were not the preferred trading currency of the world. But with this said, I wouldn’t take the lack of understanding of either democratic or republican candidates about the globalization of markets. The key indicator of their future policy, after all, is that they will have to hire well versed cabinet members on economic policy. Perhaps they will tap me to lead an economic agency.

With this said, we are now engaged in a barbeque market environment just like China, India, South Africa, Brazil, and Russia. The US is one of the countries on a stake of shish- kabob that is being skewered on an economic grill, and yes, we are in it for the long run. What will happen to our economic future? Just like meat on a grill, it will shed its fat. For the US economy, our fat is our economic growth projection as we become leaner and less fatty as a country so will the other strong economies around the world that share the same
