Whirlwind currents barged her head as his tongue set hers on fire. Flames singed her mouth, rushing downward to her chest, tightening her nipples to erect tips.

In his eyes, a glow so bright oozed from their depths, slowly turning them into hot coals.

Her fingers strayed to his nipples, making them do her bidding, moaning when the tips peaked within her grip.

Groaning into her mouth, Jermaine’s tongue asked for more, demanded more, and sucked every inch of her inner lips until her legs wobbled. Then he lowered his head, his eyes narrowing to sensational slits.

Little flames burnt her throat and she swallowed.

No way, she begged. Jermaine, you can’t go inside my bra.

Look into my eyes.

Lifting her head, Roli glanced up at him.

He brushed her lips with one finger, then two, before he swallowed her mouth.

Tiny shivers snaked down her back…stretching further down.

Stomach-clenching trouble, disguised as her towering, dark-eyed and oh-so-gorgeous neighbour came knocking on Roli’s entrance door on Monday evening.

I came to invite you to my housewarming party, Jermaine Tucker disclosed with his left thumb hooked through the gold chain sitting around his burly neck.

As if prompted, her eyes followed the cross pendant resting safely on his chest exposed via the priest-collar navy blue shirt fastened to his toned upper body like second skin. With the long-sleeves rolled back to his elbows, his urbane appearance took on a jagged edge.

Lifting her chin at an angle, she raised her eyebrows. You mean after all he did to her three weeks ago, her neighbour had the guts to cross over his yard to hers? There’s no need to pretend we’re friends. I’ll not be at your party. Not for all the money on this side of Essex Coast. Don’t count me as one of your expected guests. She moved to shut the solid wood door in his grinning face.

But Jermaine stuck one foot between the door and the oak frame, one full dark eyebrow arched. I can’t believe you’re still holding a grudge, Roli Boyo. The incident happened weeks ago. If we’re neighbours, surely we can be polite to each other?

Shifting her straying eyes from the intricate web of tattoos on his right arm, she swallowed fast. Neighbours yes, friends, no! I want to keep you at arm’s length. Do you have a problem with that? Her disappointment was still too raw and there was no way she was going to pretend otherwise to assuage his sudden guilt. The way he smirked every time she saw him, she doubted he had a conscience.

Shrugging with a bold gleam in his narrowing eyes, he thrust a white card through her fingers. Oh, I don’t have a problem at all. But my mama thought me to invite my neighbours to my housewarming party.

Letting the card slip to the ground, Roli gave him a grin that could freeze a polar bear. But it only served to entertain the tall man with a body she was sure many men envied and women fawned over. Well, that doesn’t include me. Go and get ready for your party and let me have a good evening.

The invitation card, carried a short distance by the cool wind normal for late May mocked their ruckus. Picking up the postcard sized sheet from the floor, he pushed it in her face. Here’s the card. See you on Saturday afternoon. And if you don’t take it from me, I’m going to stick it somewhere in your body. The choice is yours. A wicked glint darkened his eyes which raked hers, willing her to submit to his masculine swagger.

Gasping at his effrontery, Roli recovered in haste as she glanced up and down Marine Parade Road. She hoped no one overhead his reckless comment. I can’t believe your guts. There’s no reason I want to step my feet inside your house. Leave me alone and go find female company somewhere else. My life is fully booked at the moment. Try your luck next door.

Having tolerated her tirade for a short while, Jermaine pinned the invitation card to her neck, scraping her skin a little before he shut her own door in her face.

Scowling in shock and grinding her teeth until her jaw throbbed, Roli wrenched the door open and shrieked. Don’t ever come back here again!

Walking on as if he had no care in the world, he did not even glance back until he got to his front door. Then he made a peace sign with two fingers over his expansive shoulders.

For goodness sake, how long did the man spend pruning his body to shape? Long legs modelled the faded blue jeans he wore so well, she could make out every sinewy skin underneath. Not to mention his taut butt cheeks outlined to draw her attention.

You’re so infuriating! she added for good measure.

"I bet you find me infuriating and intriguing in equal measure." Jermaine threw the comment at her without looking back as he bolted his own front door.

Fuming as if charged by lightning, Roli retraced her steps and kicked her door closed. Going to sit on her sofa in the front room, she glared through the glass window.

Outside, moonlight glided over each leaf on the Silver Birch tree, painting the canopy of branches a golden green hue. But she was not in the mood to appreciate nature’s beauty.
