    Act 1

    Scene 1

All the performers for Crossfield Boarding School’s Christmas show are on stage in dancewear (leotards, leggings, etc.). They are rehearsing.

ETHAN stands center stage, as the soloist for the number they are practicing. The rest of the performers are dancing in the background, including LAYLA. The performers are also singing back-up when necessary.

Song: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (Andy Williams)

    Ethan:

It's the most wonderful time of the year

    With the kids jingle belling

And everyone telling you be of good cheer

It's the most wonderful time of the year

LAYLA bumps into another dancer, almost knocking them over.

It's the hap-happiest season of all

With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings

    When friends come to call

It's the hap-happiest season of all

    There'll be parties for hosting

    Marshmallows for toasting

And caroling out in the snow

    There'll be scary ghost stories

And tales of the glories of the

    Christmases long, long ago

It's the most wonderful time of the year

    There'll be much mistltoeing

LAYLA is incredibly off, seemingly dancing less than she usually would, the other dancers are getting irritated.

    And hearts will be glowing

    When love ones are near

It's the most wonderful time of the year

    There'll be parties for hosting

    Marshmallows for toasting

And caroling out in the snow

    There'll be scary ghost stories

And tales of the glories of the

    Christmases long, long ago

It's the most wonderful time of the year

    There'll be much mistltoeing

    And hearts will be glowing

    When love ones are near

    It's the most wonderful time

    Yes the most wonderful time

    Oh the most wonderful time

LAYLA bumps into ETHAN, and almost falls over, but he grabs her, and continues to nail the last few words in the song.

    Of the year

Concord: Alright, everyone. Thank you for- (pause) that. I promised you all I’d have you out by 4:30, but tomorrow, plan to stay late. You’re dismissed.

Everyone grabs their things and begins to leave the stage.

    Concord: Layla, a word?

LAYLA reluctantly puts down her bag and goes to talk to CONCORD.

    Layla: Yes?

Concord: Layla, I know you’re better than that. What’s with all this? All rehearsal you were...off. What is going on with you?

Layla: It’s nothing, really. It’s just- holiday excitement!

    Concord: (Suspiciously) Holiday excitement?

Layla: (Clearly fake) Yep. I sure love Christmas.

Concord: I’d consider that excuse from almost everyone. Everyone except for you.

Layla: I’m not allowed to be pumped for Christmas?

Concord: (Exasperated at the sarcasm) Layla, whatever’s going on with you, handle it.

Layla: Of course. Can I go?

    Concord: Sure.

LAYLA begins to exit. She exits the stage, and finds ETHAN waiting outside.

    Ethan: Nice rehearsal.

    Layla: Buzz off.

Ethan: Aw, c’mon, I saved your life. You can’t spare a two-minute conversation?

Layla: I’m sorry, when did you save my life?

Ethan: You almost fell, and I caught you. You could’ve cracked your skull open.

Layla: Yes. I’m sure that’s exactly what would’ve happened.

    Ethan: Yep.

Layla: (Sarcastic.) Well, thank you kind sir. I owe you my life. I bid thee adieu.

Ethan: I didn’t ask for your life.

    Layla: It was a joke.

Ethan: Nor did I think it wasn’t.

Layla: This is weird, and you suck at conversations, so I’m just gonna-

LAYLA starts to walk away, and ETHAN runs to catch up with her.

Layla: Seriously, dude? What do you want?

    Ethan: To help.

Layla: I don’t want your help.

Ethan: That rehearsal just proved you need it.

    Layla: You’re a jerk.

Ethan: And you’re in need of a tutor.

Layla: For the record, I know how to dance, and I don’t need you to teach me what I already know.

Ethan: What I just saw doesn’t look like a girl who’s too good for a teacher.

Layla: It has nothing to do with skill. I just- have a lot going on right now. There’s a lot I have to handle, and I was distracted.

    Ethan:
