ELZORA - Yvonne
Introduction
Facing dangers
Struggling to catch her breath, silence filling the air, her attention soon falls on the teacher taking notes. She looks up and gives her a grin. Her Note-cards shuffling in her hands. It's her final year of school. Her final year of being treated like an outcast. Jody as an eighteen-year old woman, has to speak in front of her class.
JODY
We belong to a generation that watched our future get stolen from right under us. The dream we had and the dream our parents wished for us faded away. People these days’ bribe, lie and even kill for money to become the higher power we all strive to have. It used to be when you get good grades you could get into a good school and get a good job as you get older but lately it all depends on how much money your parents are willing to put on the table to secure you a place in a fast growing society. People always say be careful what you wish for but I never believed that. I always wanted to make a difference but not by sitting in a hot shot company earning billions to only let it be taken by strangers pointing a gun at my head in the middle of the night.
She’s hurting inside and we can see it. She’s a fighter though. So finding her inner composure she drops her note cards.
JODY
There are truly no more inspirational role models in life. Everybody’s adapting with the technology. Things are changing to such an extent that we all would soon be replaced by robots. Over the centuries humans have progressed. With the new age at hand, the children of today face a greater threat. Innocence have been taken by societies that lead the countries, faced with the realities of the new world, violence, abuse, sex and drugs poison the minds of children and effect their way of living, no longer does the essence of the free spirited child able to explore the land and let their imagination run wild exist but those who suffer the most are able to create the incredible. In this world a great war takes place so does a war commences in the minds of the young
With more excitement in her voice she was soon stopped
MISS CONNER
The start was very captivating but as you always do, you wondered off topic
Laughter filled the classroom
MISS CONNER
You really need to focus and follow through when giving a speech, but as usual, this is what daydreaming gives you, the inability to focus and you start wondering
The laughter got louder. A tear drops from her cheek onto my notes on the floor. School hasn’t been kind to her.
The smell of smoke started to burn her thought as she notices three boys in the back row smoking.
JODY
You’re killing the earth!
She walks back to her seat still with a roaring sound of giggles and gossip in the air. The look of embarrassment on her face she sat down at her desk.
MISS CONNER
Now ladies and gentlemen
Her bright red lips and her hourglass body, every boy’s lust and all the married teacher’s mistress waddled her way to the front from the back. Taking the last drag of the cigarette and passing it back to one of the boys.
MISS CONNER
It is time to face facts, everybody here has a destiny. Whatever that might be I want it to come through in these speeches, this being your last year it is best to make your mark before you are completely forgotten. Some of you will have babies before even leaving school
Turning her head she carefully looks at Nadine sitting on the far right in front. 3 months pregnant.
MISS CONNER
That being said! It’s not too late to turn things around
As Jody’s mind drifted away she carefully outlined the words carved on her desk. Trying to free her mind from the happenings of the day.
Time Passes and she leaves school. The sound of the wind caressing her ears and blows through the afternoon sky as a smell of shit travels with it. Her mind darkens as she looks at the people with guns walking past her. This is a way of life, this is the toughest neighborhood and yet nobody wants to change. She closed her eyes as she started walking slower trying to pretend that time stopped. She takes a deep breath as she cleared her thoughts trying to remember the dream she had.
She starts to drift as she feels peaceful, bliss, she makes her way through a forest, and a map flashed a name in front of her ‘Iska’. The sound of the ocean close by blows a sense of calmness through her. A face of a little boy, blonde hair with dimples. His voice was kind and sweet as he just asked her to go play with him and his black friends. Suddenly a storm rose over the sea. Loud gunshots were fired. The noise of the people overwhelmed her. Her head slowly starts turning into a bundle of mixed memories. Suddenly a loud noise filled her ears.
ANGRY MAN:
Hey! I could have run you over! Watch were your walkin’, stupid kid
An angry man yelling from his car a few inches from her as she ran across the street.
JODY
Sorry!
She yelled as he waved. The man drove off pointing his middle finger in the air flipping me off as he left tire marks on the road.
She let go of a sign as she reached the front porch steps of her house.
JODY
Home sweet home
(The front door gave a rusty creek)
JODY
The power out again?
The house filled with darkness
JODY
I’m home!
(Her voice echoed across the spider webbed halls)
She left her bag and made her way upstairs
JODY
Looks like nobody’s home
Peaches her pet cat jumped off her bed to come and greet her. She picked her up and took a seat on the bed stroking her
JODY
Mom didn’t clean again today hey?
A sudden noise come from downstairs.
MOM
Hey dear, mind your step
(In a rush she swiftly moved past her cleaning up the glass)
MOM
What?
Looking at Jody with her big brown eyes
JODY
Normally parents give their kids hugs and kisses when they get home
While bending down wanting to pick up a piece of glass her mother missed
MOM
No! Don’t touch that!
(Her voice screeched)
MOM
Well we aren’t ordinary parents now are we?
JODY
Alright.
Taking the first few steps back upstairs
MOM
The only memory you have of me is this
(Sympathetically looks up)
JODY
Well I didn’t ask for this!
(Glaring back. She wanted to storm off)
MOM
You have a special gift
(A smile grew on her face)
JODY
Yeah seeing dead people how great
Jody folds her arms trying to see if her mother would answer this time. Every day they have the same argument almost like clockwork.
MOM
The generator only creates the memory of the person who passed away, it was the only way to save you.
She pleaded trying to reach out to her with her hand. The night they broke in two thugs shot her once and Jody’s Mother three times in the back. She gave her something called The Memory Generator, apparently it goes back a long time ago
JODY
If a life is taken a life can be spared right?
MOM
Yes, I died to let you live. Besides you’ll always have the memory of me with...
She faded way
JODY
What!
She didn’t come back
JODY
Sigh*
The house fell silent as she slowly made my way up the stairs. Jody made peace with her death a long time ago but always having her memory around seemed to torment her.
JODY
My day was fine thanks for asking
Peaches tilted her head
JODY
Like anybody wanted to know right?
Peaches give a soft meow as she leaves the room
JODY
What? She’ll be back tomorrow!
She yelled at Peaches
JODY
I should seriously stop talking to myself
NICK
It’s only weird if you answer yourself as well
Nick sat by the window
JODY
How did you get up here?
His dark eyes and light skin illuminates in the setting sun rays
NICK
Hey, stop fantasizing please
He is the smartest boy in our class
JODY
So what brings you here?
She reached for the knife in her jacket pocket
NICK
Hey! No need to do that
He held a gun in his hand.
NICK
I only want to talk Oh this?
He put the gun on the floor and held his hands in the air
NICK
I use it for safety purposes only
He slowly moved closer
JODY
I didn’t think the smartest kid in my class can be so stupid to be involved in a gang.
He walked closer towards her. She jumped up swinging her knife at him. He quietly sat on the edge of the bed taking off his torn jacket
NICK
Me and the boys
