Chapter One
Weasel yanked Big Benny’s Socks and Shorts from the shower curtain rod in preparation to take a shower. He turned on the water and waited for the water to get hot. Then he took a ten minute shower. When he traipsed into the living room Big Benny was sitting on the couch watching television. Bout time you’re up,
he greeted. It’s five O’clock."
So what?
I had a long night."
Win anything?
Naw, ended up losing ten bucks.
So your system still not working.
Just needs some fine tuning, that’s all. You better go in there a get your socks and underwear. I had to take them down to take a shower. And get those comic books out of there too.
So why didn’t you put ‘em back when you were done?
Cause I didn’t feel like it,
Weasel snarled. You gotta quit washing your shorts and socks in there and hanging ‘em on the shower rod. And when you sit on the crapper reading comic books please take ‘em back into the bedroom when you’re done.
Why? My socks and shorts ain’t hurtin’ nothing. I didn’t have enough money for the laundromat.
Just stop it. I don’t like to see ‘em.
Okay. I guess I will. But it’s not nice of you to say that, Weasel.
Before Weasel could reply his cell rang. It was Melissa, his C.S.I. friend. He answered it and Benny went off into the bathroom. Hi, Melissa, what’s up?
Percy,
she said, calling him by his real name as she always did,Can you take me out tonight? I’m in awful need of company.
What’s the matter? You sound down in the dumps.
Oh, I am, Percy. I really am. If it’s okay, I’ll pick you up at seven.
Uh, sweetie, I’m kinda short on money.
What’s new? Never mind, I’ll even pay.
Wow, something must be wrong. Okay, come ahead, I’ll be ready.
See you then, love, Bye.
He hung up and wondered what had her by the tail.
Big Benny came out of the bathroom. I heard your phone ring. I hope it was a new client.
Nah, no such luck. It was Melissa. She’s taking me out to dinner. She seemed upset.
She’s taking you?
Yeah.
She’s paying?
Yeah, that’s right.
Aw, aw.
What’s with the aw, aw?
Weasel, you’re the guy that knows about women. If she’s paying, she must be up to somethin’
Like what?
Haven’t got a clue.
Benny shrugged his shoulders. But you can bet she’s gonna spring somethin’ heavy on you.
Maybe. Anyway, she’ll be here at seven.
Have fun. I got twenty bucks. Gonna have a few beers.
That’s all you’ll have with twenty bucks,
Weasel said. Do yourself a favor. Go sit in a Racebook or Keno lounge, play a little, and drink free, except for the toke."
Yeah. I know where I can play some forty cent Keno. I might even win,
Benny grinned.
That’s the spirit, Champ.
Big Benny left. Weasel settled on the couch and waited for Melissa.
She arrived right on time. He got in the car. Okay, shoot. What’s the problem?
Not now, Percy. I don’t want to discuss it while I’m driving.
Okay.
He sat silent for a moment then offered, So how was your day?
I’d rather not say, right now.
She stared straight ahead, attended to her driving.
Weasel took the hint. He sat silent until they got settled in at the buffet. As usual, her plate was fuller than his. I can’t believe you brought me to this cheap buffet. You always complain when I bring you here.
It’s different this time.
How so?
This time, I’m paying.
She grabbed a chicken leg from her plate, took a big bite. After she chewed awhile. She said, Percy, Jay Adams is dead.
Oh, no, not Jay!
Then you know who he was?
Not a clue. Never heard of him,
Weasel admitted.
You, you, Weasel! I ought to throw this plate at you.
Calm down. Tell me what’s got you so riled about this guy? Friend? Lover?
She sat her plate back down. I was called to a crime scene this morning. The victim was Jay Adams. He was a popular star on one of the afternoon TV shows. I couldn’t believe It. He was the handsomest man I ever saw in my life.
More handsome than me?
She looked down at the table. Not the time for jokes, Percy. Not the time.
Weasel shook his head. I don’t get it. You didn’t know him. But you’re as upset as though he was a close relative or friend.
I did know him, well, sort of. I worked on the show as a consultant last year. I met him a few times. He was as nice as he was handsome. So I felt close to him. Oh, I guess no one understands.
I’m trying, Melissa. I really am.
Weasel stirred his food around. You never told me you worked as a consultant on a TV show,
I don’t tell you everything, you know. Besides, I think I was mad at you at the time. A tear streamed down Melissa’s face.
I know I’m carrying on. I know and I feel a little silly. But seeing his body like that after just seeing him on TV every night and actually meeting him, it just got to me."
Weasel looked perplexed. Every night? Thought you said he was on an afternoon show?
He was. A Soap. Talk Of The Town. They repeat it every night on the Soap channel.
I see. I guess it did come as a shock, if you watched him that much.
It was. Percy, I want you to solve his murder.
What? Me? Why me? You work for the police. You’re a C.S.I, and a damn good one. What makes you think I can solve his murder?
Cause you have a knack for it, you and Benny. Do you realize how many open murder cases we have going on right now?
Weasel shrugged.
Thirteen. That’s a lot. You can give the case top priority.
Him being a television star, I imagine he’ll get top priority from the police as well?
Yes, yes, he will. But if they don’t solve it quickly, the detectives will have to move on. Don’t worry, you’ll get paid.
Melissa, I don’t want your money. You can’t afford three hundred a day.
He reached over and wiped a dab of gravy from her lip.
She picked up a napkin and wiped the same area. I know I can’t. But the producer of the television show, Talk Of The Town, can.
And what makes you think he’ll hire me and Benny?
Cause I already talked to him. Finish up and let’s go. He’s expecting us.
What? You made a meeting without asking me first?
Yes. I know you. You want the case. You can use the money, can’t you?
"Yeah, me and Benny can use the money all right. Let me call him and tell him what’s going on. I don’t want him to feel left out. He is my partner."
I know. But I also know you’re the brains.
Don’t sell him short. Benny pulls his weight.
Weasel dialed Benny’s cell. He just said he had a job lined up.
"If you can get us a job, Weasel, go ahead. We are broke ya know."
Weasel affirmed and hung up. Okay, kiddo, let’s go meet this producer.
Weasel knocked on the door of the producer’s suite. Before they could go up, they had to wait while the desk clerk called him and got his consent.
The producer opened the door and beamed. "Melissa, darling. It’s so nice to see you again. He hugged her and kissed her on the cheek.
Weasel rolled his eyes.
I take it this is your private detective chap?
Yes it is. Melvin Ross, meet Percy Periwinkle.
The producer clasped Weasel’s hand with both of his. So nice to meet you, Detective,
he beamed.
Weasel was taken somewhat aback. Uh, nice to meet you too, Mr Ross.
Have a seat, Detective.
The director pointed to a plush easy chair.Weasel sat. He watched Melissa find an empty chair, then he spoke. I’m sorry about your loss.
The director’s smile disappeared.
Yes, yes. Most tragic about Jay, most tragic. We will miss him greatly. I hope you can bring his killer to justice, but either way, we can’t bring him back, now can we?"
No, no, we can’t.
Weasel shifted in his chair.
But what can be brought back is a hundred thousand dollar Rolex that he took without permission.
Scuse me. This is the first I’ve heard about a missing Rolex. Are you saying he stole your Rolex?
Melissa piped up. This is the first I’ve heard of it too. Did you tell the police detectives about it?"
Yes, I did,
the producer answered. They said Jay was probably a victim of a mugging and not to count on the watch being found. As for your question, Detective, he didn’t steal the watch from me personally, but took it from the shows prop room without permission. Les Hawkins can explain it better than I. Les would
