    MURDER MY FRIEND

Jack Snow lay sprawled face down across his bed. His phone rang. He let it ring. It was persistent. He reached for it. What the hell is it? he barked. He was in a foul mood. He had been all night out drinking and gambling. He was exhausted.

Jack, it’s Harry Kincaid. Can you come to my office right away?

Harry was a good friend. But even friends can be trying sometimes. Not a good time, Harry. I’ve been on a bender. Can it wait?"

No it can’t, Jack. Any other time I’d say get back in the sack. But this is important.

What’s so important that it can’t wait?

I can’t say on the phone. How soon can you get here?

Let me take a quick shower and I’ll be right there.

Good. I knew I could count on you.

Jack headed for the shower. Anyone else, he would have told them they would have to wait whether they liked it or not. But not Harry Kincaid. They practically grew up together. They were closer than most brothers. He introduced Harry to his wife and was best man at their wedding. No, if Harry said it was urgent. He had no choice. He had to go.

When he showed up at Harry’s office, there was another man with him. Harry stood up, flashed a big smile. Thanks for coming, Jack. You don’t look so bad. Jack, this here is Ronald Duckworth. He has a proposal for you.

The man stood up, extended his hand. Glad you could make it, Snow. I’ve heard a lot about you.

Jack took the man’s hand. He had a bad handshake. Weak and sweaty. Okay, what’s so damned important?

I’ll get right to the point, Snow. I’m being blackmailed.

Jack sat down in one of his lawyer friend’s comfortable chairs. He looked at his friend with some doubt. And this couldn’t wait until tomorrow?

Duckworth hastened to answer. No, it can’t wait. Time is of the essence. This man wants a quick answer or else he will send his evidence to the police.

What man? Who is blackmailing you and why?

Dutch Hayworth. And it’s a phony rap but he says he has evidence.

Dutch Hayworth is a low level thug and a gambler. The police wouldn’t believe him on the proverbial stack of bibles. If it’s a phony rap, then don’t pay. Now if you gentlemen will excuse me I hear my bed calling.

Wait, Duckworth exclaimed hear me out, after all you are already here."

Jack turned. I thought I did hear out, friend. I gave you my advice.

I didn’t ask for your advice, Snow. I want you to deliver the blackmail money to Dutch. Or pretend to.

I don’t deliver blackmail money. It’s against my principals.

You haven’t heard the rest of it. I said, pretend to. I heard you’re a tough cookie, Snow. I want you to take the evidence Dutch has away from him and bring it to me. I’ll pay you five grand to do it.

Let me get this straight. You want me to steal documents from Dutch Hayworth that may contain evidence of a crime and turn them over to you?

    Yeah, you got it straight.

Jack turned to his friend. I’m surprised at you. What were you thinking anyway?"

    The lawyer just turned away.

Ronald Duckworth intervened. "I’ll tell you what I was thinking, Snow. Word on the street is you and Dutch have no love lost between you. I was thinking I’d be doing you a favor by letting you in on this. You could get a leg up on Dutch, make some money and help me out too. I’m sure you can use the money. Word also on the street is you have a love affair with the game of craps."

Jack reddened. Get out of here, Duckworth or I’ll throw you out the window. And may I remind you that we’re on the fourth floor.

Duckworth rushed to the door, took a moment to shoot out a parting remark. You boys will be sorry for this, real sorry.

When he was gone, the lawyer perched himself on his desk. Sorry about all this, Jack.

What the hell is wrong with you, Harry? Are you getting tired of having a law license? Stunts like this can get you disbarred in a flash.

Yes, I’m aware of that. But I felt pretty sure you wouldn’t go squawking to anyone.

And I won’t. But why? What’s this crumb, Duckworth to you?

Nothing. Today is the first time I ever laid eyes on the guy.

Then I’m really confused. You better explain.

Simple. I need money. Phylis has been gambling heavily. She’s about wiped me out. Duckworth promised me a thousand if I could get you a meeting with him, five more if you took the job.

Really? He must want that evidence Dutch is supposed to have real bad.

    Yeah, he said so.

Okay, it’s done with. I hope you got that thousand up front.

    The lawyer grinned. I did,

Okay, what’s this about Phylis? You said she’s gambling? What sort of gambling?

Cards. Poker, mostly Texas Holdem. She got to watching a bunch of it on TV. After a while she got a crazy notion she could do it as well as the players she saw. She started with low stakes in the casinos, had a little luck then figured she could do it in the big tournaments. I staked her to a couple and she got nowhere. Busted on the first day both times. She started making excuses. Said the tournaments were not the way to go. Too many players staying with bad hands and getting lucky. I figured that would be it. That she would give the whole thing up.

    So I’m guessing she didn’t.

You guessed right. She came up with a new idea. Playing in private games where she only had to beat six to nine other players.

I’d hate to figure what happened next.

Right. She got in deeper and deeper. Started leaving markers with Dutch Hayworth. He was running the private games she was sitting in.

    How deep is she in?

"I’m ashamed to say but he sent me a message that she owes
