Lesson One

The Sun God

Apollo rides his golden chariot across the sky each dawn to dusk

Apollo is the Greek and Roman God of the Sun, Music, the Light and Prophecy. He is considered the perfect youth who is accomplished in many ancient arts, such as healing, music, archery, poetry, knowledge and philosophy.

His father was the powerful God, Zeus and his mother, the beautiful Titan, Leto. He was born on the Greek island of Delos and he has a twin sister Artemis or Diana, Goddess of the Hunt. His sister also called Selene, became the Goddess of the Moon and so in tandem, they ruled the skies.

He was known for his great beauty and was the lover of many beautiful women and men. Apollo has a beardless, athletic and youthful appearance and he became the ideal ‘kouros’ or perfect representation of a young male. He is depicted in this way in many Greek and Roman statues.

Apollo as a God was able to predict happenings, use magic to attain his goals and often sided with the Greek armies in their wars.

Medicine and Healing are associated with Apollo and were thought to occasionally, be mediated through his son, Asclepius. Asclepius is the current symbol for doctors. However, Apollo could also bring ill health and deadly plague to his enemies.

Temples were constructed to him in many ancient lands, such as Greece, Rome, Europe and Asia from the eighth Century BC. His religion had thousands of ardent followers.
