    The words turned to numbers, and the numbers turned boring. So Mark got up from his computer, took out a cigarette from the pack, and headed to his window. Sure, it was a bad habit. In fact, he was pretty sure it would kill him someday .

    Which was why he kept quitting.

    But his work had a way of getting to him. Of making him feel small, overwhelmed. Diminished.

    Sometimes he wondered if he took it too seriously. He was just a sales letter writer, after all. So many people dreamed of being successful copywriters, of working from home and making big bucks. And here was Mark doing it well enough to earn a comfortable living, yet sometimes he just hated it. Mostly because, despite the years he had been doing it, he still felt like he was talentless. Like someday, someone would knock on his door and call him out for being a fraud, and his work would stop and he’d have to find another

    And then he’d have to leave the house. Somehow.

    He let out a puff of smoke, and sighed as it disappeared in the night’s air. He crushed the rest of the cigarette into the ashtray he kept by the window.

    A light went up in the apartment across the street from him. Mark’s eyes turned to it instinctively. Moments later, he could see the Woman’s shape moving across her living room, her drapes made see-through by her houselights.

    Mark pulled up a chair, sat by the window, and watched. Another bad habit he had to quit again, soon. And something else that
