Chapter 1 The Inn
A child stood on the side of the road. Tears were streaming down her cheeks. Her mom was still in the car. The child, Ada, wasn’t sure why her mom wouldn’t answer her. Someone had driven into their car. Fortunately, the 5 year old was sitting on the back seat secured by a seat belt behind one of the front seats. She could see her mom hunched over the steering wheel not saying a word. There was blood.
Ada made a silent plea. She couldn’t talk because of the tears. Surely her father would come? Or someone? She had remembered her mom talked about having a strange sister who ran an inn by herself. Her mom had said they were going to visit this strange sister. Ada didn’t want to go. She thought it meant she would never see her mom again.
There was no one else on the road. The child looked. There was no one at all. No humans. There were some animals in the nearby forest. This was Earth, where there was still a forest. One area not spoiled by humans. The child had no idea where she was. It was too far from the city where she had lived with her mom.
A strange looking little boy, with reddish skin, red eyes, and red hair, was crying again. His mom had to be in the house where he wasn’t allowed to go. He didn’t like the man his mom worked for. Little Lui sat on the ground surrounded by a fire that wasn’t consuming him. He wiped his tears away and prayed. He prayed for one who would help him, his mom, and the others get rid of the awful man.
It was the only thing the boy could do to make things better. Sometimes his mom would be away too long. He knew there were others and they looked after him, but it just wasn’t the same. When she came back, when that awful man was done with her, she tended to cry for days. She was always sick.
The little boy couldn’t understand what was wrong. The others had told him it was because she was in her humanoid form too long. She wasn’t well until she became flames as they often were. Then she would get better. Lui only had a humanoid form. He was half human unlike those around him.
He never stopped praying for one to help until he became a teenager. Then he decided it was plain silly and perhaps it was time to find another way to get rid of the awful man that he unfortunately resembled a little except in coloring.
Jack watched his general walk out of the room. The young man stood in his uniform. He looked down to the floor. His general was a middle aged man who had many mistresses. Jack wondered if he had made a mistake by going with the general instead of staying with his girlfriend. He remembered she had said she was pregnant, but she wasn’t showing then.
He closed his eyes. Did she have the child? He had no idea. They had stopped talking to each other. But still he remembered. He could see her sister standing before him. Berating him for his choice. He gave his pathetic excuses. But he did need the money. There was no way he would have been able to take care of himself, his girlfriend, and a baby on the jobs which were available to him in the area.
It wasn’t an easy choice. The general had offered him better pay with all his basics covered like food, shelter, and clothing. But he wasn’t allowed to have any children of his own. And no mistresses of his own either. It had been several years and Jack was now wondering if his girlfriend’s sister was right about him.
He regretted leaving his girlfriend. But how could he get back to her now? The general was not to be crossed. He was a man who could do as he pleased and get away with all sorts of ethical violations. Jack had to be above reproach. How else could the young man become the general’s right hand man? Jack had to keep all the general’s secrets to himself. Jack wasn’t allowed to tell anyone what he really knew.
He knew the general was married with children. His family lived on Earth. The general traveled around the solar system as he was in the space military. So Jack continued to muse about how his life would have been different if he hadn’t joined the space military.
At the inn, Sophia stopped dead in her work. She was frozen in place as she saw her sister drive her car down the lonely highway with her daughter in the back seat. Sophia knew her sister was afraid she could no longer take care of the 5 year old. She was coming to leave Ada with Sophia. But then a reckless driver came out of nowhere and hit the car.
Her sister was dead from the impact. But the child was still alive and all alone. And very scared. Sophia looked around her. She saw her only employee serving food to one of the guests. Sophia approached her.
Ginny.
Yes, Sophia?
I need to go for a walk. I’ll be back as soon as I can.
Okay.
Ginny walked away.
Sophia grabbed her cloak and walked out of the inn. She could see in her head where Ada was clearly. Just on the edge of the forest. Sophia tried to send some comforting energy to the child. I’m coming. You’ll be fine.
Ada heard someone talking to her. She gasped and looked around. There was no one. Even mom seemed too far away. She wiped her tears. She kept looking around expectedly. Who was coming for little Ada? The child was curious. She looked past the car farther down the road.
She blinked. There wasn’t anyone on the road. She turned to look in the other direction. No one there either. Who was coming? She sighed and looked at the car. She could see her mom, but yet, it no longer felt as if her mom was nearby. She looked down at the road.
Once again she looked up in one direction and saw someone approach. The child couldn’t tell who it was. The person was wearing a cloak with the hood over their head. Ada stared at the person with eyes wide and mouth gaping. Was this the
