Publishing 101 - Ali Noel Vyain
Introduction
This is a how to with tips and tricks for dealing with publishing in the 21st century. There is a lot of advice out there and I’ve found most of it is worthless. It’s not helping people who want to earn money from their writing. If anything, following the advice will cause people to lose money rather than to earn it.
A big part of the problem with that advice is that it’s applied from general business practices. Those practices don’t always work when you want to sell anything that is creative. Too many times, it’s easier to spend money on creative projects rather than to earn it back.
I’ve learned the hard way how not to spend money and still earn money. It’s more possible now than it was before ebooks became so widely available. Technology and economics have changed publishing in just a short time, which makes it possible to earn money without first spending it. Or at least not spend as much beforehand as we had to in the past before these technological changes.
In the 21st century you can publish your own work without spending any more money than you do on your computer and Internet access. It’s as simple as that. Too many people don’t understand or even know that is very possible now.
I started in publishing March 2003. That was when I started a monthly magazine while living in Tucson, Arizona, USA. I didn’t necessary know what I was doing at first, but learned as I kept at that magazine for 13 volumes. It was a lot of work to package it. Sometimes I wrote things that I published in the magazine, but much of the work came from other people.
Eventually, I published books from other people and a few from myself. I learned a lot from all that experience. Now I just focus on my own books. I also learned things about publishing that most people have no clue about.
I know how the traditional publishers are and how they don’t tend to promote new writers. In fact, they expect new writers to already have a following and do their own book promotion. They also have unrealistic expectations on how many copies in a matter of months the books should sell. They don’t have an unlimited amount of money to spend on books. So, they have to be choosy in some way or
