Chapter One
The rain started slowly.
It began as a drizzle that fell on the steep hills of the island, but soon turned into a powerful shower of water that drenched the dry earth and the thirsty vegetation far beneath the sky. A collection of yellow-crested cockatoos — a species of critically endangered birds with white feathers and a beautiful yellow crest stretching from their heads — chirped and screamed, rising from their tall branches and flying up to wet themselves in the cold rain before returning to their trees.
A few macaques — small monkeys — watched with curiosity, avoiding the cold rain from reaching them by keeping themselves concealed under the branches with the most leaves. One of them stood on a wet branch and looked up at the sky, silently thanking the rain for falling when it had. They hadn’t seen rain for the past few months and it was a welcome event.
Michael, get back here!
an older monkey cried. The macaque’s father, a slightly larger monkey with a few grey hairs on his chest stepped forward. He didn’t want his son to get wet or he could get sick. The rainy season had just begun and they would need to stay healthy if they wanted to survive it.
Mike looked up, only now realizing that his father had been talking to him.

He hopped forward and ran down the branch back to the safety of his family.
As he sat there, he stopped looking up and glanced across the coastline beneath them, his eyes following the beautiful pinkish sands that were being drenched by the summer rains. Suddenly, his eyes stopped at one of the large rocks that stood on the very edge of the coast, its outwards face being hit by the waves that slammed into it every few seconds. Is that…?
It was definitely who Mike was thinking it was.
The large, young Komodo dragon stood with his long head leaning forward on the edge of the boulder, his eyes looking out at the sea with longing. Although the rain was drenching him entirely, the lizard didn’t even react. He, like Mike, was too distracted to realize what was happening around him.
That’s why he’s my best friend,
