Chapter One
A CHANGE
Monica pulled herself together and tried once more to change her husband’s mind. Odaca, are you sure this is this best thing to do? After all this time why must everything change with our son?
Monica, it’s hard enough knowing that I won’t be with him while he grows and learns things from someone else, things that should be ours to teach him. It will be hard on everyone, but I am convinced it is the best thing we can do for our son and the subjects of Reflection.
They embraced in a gentle hug, and Monica knew the matter was closed to further discussion.
Floating high above Reflection, disguised as a soft-white, fluffy cloud, was the most advanced spaceship in the Guardian Fleet. Angel-One was hot off the production line and had all the bells and whistles. It was a box-shaped craft that tapered to sharp points on all four sides. Underneath the body was a glass dome where the pilot sat. On top was a smaller box where the crew slept. The main box was full of equipment, including the star drive, which powered Angel-One. Inside the ship were two veteran angels: Ode, first-class computer technician, and Maddox, first pilot of the Guardian Fleet. Their mission was to monitor and report anything unusual back to their supervisor on Reyala, a small Earth-like moon orbiting Reflection.
Maddox was sitting in the pilot’s seat, and Ode was sitting above him, watching a bank of PC monitors. Maddox was just about to move Angel-One to a new sector when Ode said, Wait… I think something’s happening down at the sheriff’s station.
Maddox asked him to patch it through to his monitor so he could have a look. Sure enough, a large crowd was gathering around a huge conch shell some one hundred feet below the surface. The conch shell was the home of the local sheriff.
Look, here come a couple more,
said Ode. They watched as a mother sea creature half-dragged her son to the station. I recognize them,
said Maddox. Isn’t she the one that lost her husband to that hammer-tooth shark last month? It was a nasty accident, remember?
Who could forget? I felt so bad for them. What do you think she’s up to?
We’ll find out soon enough,
said Maddox.
As the mother creature approached the sheriff’s station, her heart sank. What now? she thought. The young creature wasn’t going to school, and to make matters worse, he had told her that he didn’t need her advice anymore, which only added to her grief. Her brother was the sheriff, and she was hoping he would administer some tough love.
She swam over to a sunfish she knew from school and asked what was going on.
Oh, Betty, it’s just terrible. The Blue Prince has been kidnapped.
Maddox and Ode just about fell out of their seats when they heard this. The young creature gave a small smile as he realized his uncle would not have time for him today.
Ode said, How could we have missed this? The prince is only six months old. We’re in trouble now, Maddox. I don’t think I can handle getting busted down another grade.
Relax, Ode. We’ll head for Reyala straightaway to report this and hope that the news hasn’t reached them yet.
As Maddox began his flight checklist, Ode said, I have something happening on radar seventy-five miles to the west.
Maddox pulled up the screen and watched as a spaceship lifted off the ocean floor. It rose fast and after breaking through the surface, shot two hundred feet into the air. It hung there suspended for a moment while its water jets closed and its hydrogen engines kicked in. Then it blasted into outer space, where it circled Reflection twice before shooting off into the vastness of the universe. Aboard the spaceship were three families of merpeople, three families of the royal guard, a human pilot named Nick Pinto, and the Blue Prince.
Angel-One approached Reyala with permission to land at Vargas, a beautiful villa set into the mountainside overlooking Brandywine Lake. The villa had its own landing pad, one strong enough for Angel-One to land safely. Maddox and Ode exited the ship and walked over to where their supervisor was waiting. Mya was short with strong features, including light-blonde hair, a tan complexion, and beautiful blue eyes that did her personality justice. Her wings were slightly wrinkled, but straight enough to hide her age. One look into those blue eyes, and you knew she was all business.
Hello, Maddox, Ode. How are you?
Mya knew all about the Blue Prince but thought it would be fun making them tell the tale. She saw that Ode was nervous and Maddox was doing his best to keep him calm. But they both started talking at once, and the story that rushed forth made no sense at all. Whoa, whoa… slow down boys.
When Maddox and Ode stopped speaking, Mya knew they thought they were in trouble.
I’ve known for some time that the prince would be taken off-planet, so please relax, You’re not in trouble.
With a smile, she gestured for them to sit down at the table that was set up on the landing pad. When they were seated, an attendant brought three glasses of heavenly tea along with some peach pie. As they ate, Mya told them how the royal family had requested that the prince be removed until his twelfth birthday. "The reason for the request is to allow him to grow up away from the ruling class, hopefully instilling within him a new sense of life and fresh perspective so that when it’s his
