Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabrics or other materials with needle and thread or yarn. In many cases embroidery may also incorporate other materials as well, like pearls, beads, sequins etc.
Picture 1 – Multi – head machine in an embroidery unit in Mumbai
Handmade embroidery goes back to the 5th century BC, and continued to work with similar techniques for many centuries. Industrial embroidery came in stages from 1800 until our days, but some 40 years ago a revolution took place, and machine embroidery changed the industry upside down. In 1977, Barudan, one of the biggest Japanese embroidery machine manufacturers, created the first multi – head embroidery machine (see picture 1). Mass production changed the world as we knew it up to then, and big firms exploited the opportunity which stood in front of them, in order to make big profit.
In our days though, the face of the industry seems to be changing again. Mass production firms are going bankrupt, and production is moving to lower cost countries like China. Some think that there’s nothing to be done about it. Others, the clever ones, are preparing to make a lot of money out of the new trend that is here to stay for many years to come. Its name is personalization
, and I’m going to teach you how to make money out of it from your home.
Modern embroidery has nothing to do with old handmade embroidery. Most contemporary embroidery is being done using computerized embroidery machines. A person called digitizer
or puncher
uses specialized software called embroidery software
, in order to transform an image, for example a logo, into embroidery. Then this design file, which is called embroidery design
, is transferred to the embroidery machine in order to embroider it onto the desired material, e.g. fabric. It sounds difficult, but with proper training, it is possible today for one person to handle both the digitizing and the embroidery process. In other words, today’s technology allows a person to handle the production of a finished embroidery product by himself. Moreover, in today’s globalized market, it’s not the quantity that brings the real profit, it’s the quality. That is mainly the quality of digitizing, and secondly the quality of embroidery. If the digitizer does a crappy work, then whatever the embroiderer does, and however good work he does, the end result cannot be better than the actual digitizing quality. So, digitizing is the first step, and in my opinion the most important one in modern embroidery. That is why there are many embroiderers, but few digitizers. When you finish this course, you will be able to create a state of the art embroidery design, and consider yourself a quality digitizer.
Decorated apparel is a $14 billion industry which is estimated to grow to $20 billion at the end of the second decade of the 21st century. The previous decade was an $8 billion industry and the decade before that a $4 billion. The industry seems to double itself each decade. It is predicted that its growth will continue for many decades to come.
The decorated apparel industry includes screen printers and embroiderers. The embroidery Indus-try is estimated to be approximately one third of the decorated apparel industry. That means we are talking about a $4.6 billion industry today, which will become $6.6 billion industry in 5-10 years.
