    Shootout - Misha Talea

    Shootout

The pounding on Darrell’s front door grew louder. Knasher seemed to realize that whoever was on the other side of the door was not friendly. He began growling and barking, deep resonating sounds that bounced off the walls. Anyone listening could tell he meant business. The pounding stopped, but Knasher kept up his warning.

Darrell flashed a smile at Selina. He might actually have some guard dog in him after all.

He grew serious again as he looked out the window. His bedroom faced an alley around the back of the building. The lights from the cop cars didn’t reach all the way down it. Darrell’s gaze travelled across it to the dark yard beyond. It wasn’t fenced off.

They would be able to get down the fire escape to where he parked his cycle underneath the last landing. He kept it there so he could hear if someone was messing with it at night. They would be able to push it across the yard and start it when they reached the street that intersected with his.  Darrell turned back to Selina. Selina pulled while Darrell pushed with his good arm.

It won’t keep them out forever, but it’ll give us a few minutes head start, he said. Let’s go.

He gripped Knasher’s big snout gently and put a finger to his lips and said, Shhhh!

Knasher’s batwing-like ears perked up and then quickly went back down.

What are you doing? Selina said.

He’s coming with us. They’ll kill him if we leave him here, Darrell stated.  We’re going to have to go down the fire escape. I taught him how to stay quiet. I don’t want him barking at anyone and alerting them that we’re out there.

Selina looked at the dog and then back at Darrell. He knows what that means?

Let’s hope so. I haven’t practiced with him lately and he’s not always the smartest dog, but hopefully he remembers.

You’re leaving our safety up to whether a dog may or may not remember a command? Selina said.

    "Listen, are we going to
