    Bearly Saved: Book 1

    Chapter 1

Shelby walked into the small town bar and nodded at the barman, Joe. It was a little before the dinner hour in Bear Creek, Alaska, and she had had one of the worst days in…heck, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d had a day like this one.

Shelby ran a small guide service, usually for the seasonal hunters that frequented this part of Alaska. Situated more than a hundred and fifty miles from the city of Anchorage, Bear Creek was fairly isolated and the people who lived here liked it that way.

Shelby had been raised by the Tompkins family after her own parents were killed when she was but a wee baby. The stories surrounding their deaths were varied, and often in direct contrast with one another. A freak accident! They’d been cursed because of their relationship! Her father had lost his temper, killed his wife, and then himself!

No evidence of what really happened had ever been found. Just two bodies, buried beneath the rubble that at one time had been their home, with Shelby safely ensconced in her baby seat inside the family car. The explosion had rattled windows two miles away, and the community had come running to the rescue. But only the baby had been saved.

Now, she was twenty-three years old and ran one of the only guide services in the county. The fact that she was a bear shifter, polar bear to be exact, came in very helpful in her line of work. There had been multiple times where her inner bear had risen to the rescue, stopping other predators in their tracks just by her presence.

There had been other times where her inner strength had been able to help her save a human, just by harnessing her bear strength, and remaining in human form. One did not transform into their bear form in front of those who were unaware. It just wasn’t done.

Shelby, what’s new? Joe asked as he handed her a glass of cola. Everyone who knew Shelby, also knew she didn’t drink. Ever.

Not much. I’m supposed to be meeting some research biologist here in town.

Research biologist? What’s he studying? Joe asked, his question drawing the attention of the only other occupants of the bar – Jacob Feller and his brother, Zach.

Shelby looked at the two men and gave them a tight smile before she answered so that everyone could hear, He’s up here to study the bear population.

Silence ruled the bar. There were eighty three people living in and around Bear Creek, Alaska. Nineteen of those people were bear shifters of varying ages. Eight were children who had yet to reach the age of pubescence and hadn’t changed yet. Seven were considered elders and in their later years. That only left four shifter’s in the age bracket where Shelby currently fitted. Alyssa and Michael had gotten married a few months ago, and Jules Tompkins had married a normal human woman.

Shelby was the only shifter of marriageable age left in the town. The elders had discussed her predicament and urged her to travel to the neighboring towns where shifters lived and find a mate, but Shelby had refused.

Her inner bear had been very active in her mind of late, and she was finding it harder to ignore the lusts that attacked at every hour of the day, but she was determined to control her bear. Not the other way around!

So, why is the biologist coming here? We don’t even have a very large population of normal polar bears up here. They tend to hang out closer to the ice shelf.

That was one of the things I asked him, and he said that this area was of particular importance to him.

The thought running through everyone’s head was - what kind of information had he stumbled upon that brought Bear Creek to his attention? What would he find while he was here? And how quickly could they run him right back out of town?

Anyway, I just wanted to give you all a heads up. Pass the word and ask everyone to be careful until he’s gone. We don’t need any more publicity around here.

That we don’t, Joe agreed. I’ll see that words get around.

She smiled at Joe and then nodded to the other two gentlemen before she finished her cola and left the bar. Mr. Travis Stephenson had best get his studying done quick and head back to wherever he hails from!

    Chapter 2

Travis drove into Bear Creek with a load of trepidation in his mind. At the age of thirty-four, he had become a well-known expert on all things polar bear. The subject had been more than a passing fancy, and at the knees of his grandfather, he had learned not only of the normal polar bear, but also of the shifter bear that was to become his destiny.

Travis had first come to realize what he was at the tender age of eleven. He’d often thought there was something different about his grandparents and cousins, but he’d never been prepared to fly into a rage and end up a sixteen hundred pound white polar bear!

That first experience was something he would never forget, and he carried with him the scars that his oldest cousin had given him that day when his rage continued and only his cousin injuring him had caused him to shift back to his human form.

He had three thin white scars on his chest, the wounds had healed very quickly, and had they been made by human hands, or human weapons, they would have healed with no evidence left behind. But when one werebear attacks another, the damage might heal, but there would always be a reminder that it had occurred.

He’d spent the last five years shushing his inner bear as he researched the small communities in Northern Alaska on the pretense of research. In truth, he was searching for his mate. His approach was unorthodox and very time consuming, but one didn’t exactly place a personal ad for a female bear shifter, friendly, nurturing, and ready to meet her forever mate!

So, he’d resorted to using his research skills and kept his ear to the ground for all rumors of unusual bear activity and sightings. Bear Creek had come onto his radar when he’d stumbled across the story about a young couple that had mysteriously died some twenty-three years ago.

The evidence didn’t make sense, and at first glance, it had looked as if a faulty gas line had exploded as the couple arrived home. That would explain the presence of their only child still inside the car, strapped into a baby seat.

But there was one rumor, about the male turning into a raging animal and a murder/suicide, that had him digging further. He’s done more research and found that the child left behind still lived in Bear Creek. His mission was to meet this individual
