The Warrior of the Light
From Paulo Coelho
Summary Station

In The Warrior of the Light, Paulo Coelho has crafted a code for daily life which contains elements of morality, pragmatism, and empathy drawn from multiple sources spanning different cultures and regions. He synthesizes sources as disparate as the Christian Bible and Lao Tzu’s Art of War among others to create a code that, if sometimes contradictory, manages to be somehow cohesive at least in the sense that each lesson can be applied to some set of circumstances that most people will encounter at some point in their lives.
The narrative structure is decidedly minimalist. The prologue and epilogue act as a basic framework within which the book is set: a mysterious woman explaining the rules for a “warrior of the light” to a man who is writing them down. Presumably, the book we are reading is the result of that transaction.

    About Summary Station

    Prologue

The prologue begins with a mysterious yet alluring woman describing a temple to a small boy on the beach. After failing to find this temple (which the woman says is on an island just off the coast), the boy learns from nearby fisherman that it sunk in an earthquake long ago. The fishermen relate a legend to the boy that, although it has sunk, one can still sometimes hear the bells ringing beneath the waves.

The boy decides to sit on the beach and listen for the bells, first out of determination to prove to the mysterious woman that he could find the temple but later out of a purely materialistic desire to locate the sunken temple and take any hidden treasures that it might contain. He sits on the beach every day for months without being able to hear the bells. In his determination, he becomes isolated from his friends and life in general.

After about a year of this process, the boy decides that he needs to return to his life and give up on trying to hear the bells. He takes one final moment to listen to the various other
