Why bother to write an outline?

Many beginners don’t see the need for an outline. So they write Chapter 1 at the top and start. Most don’t get far then, or they do a very ‘beginner’s’ job of what they do write.

The great majority of established authors still write an outline for every new book they attempt. The more books they’ve written, the more they understand the importance of outlining first.

Outlining creates a tool. It is a very valuable tool that will keep you going. And further breaking it down into chapters is an even better tool.

Many new writers start with an idea for a book and end with a short story. An idea alone is not enough. Writing an outline in the way described in Book 1 of this series, develops your story. It turns your idea into something much more detailed. It gradually grows your idea into a complex series of events that turn your idea, and your short story, into a real book length story.

Writing a book is a journey. But you will get lost if you don’t know where you are going.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - ROBBIE KEW When Robbie Kew retired early from a varied working life, which included the duties of Secretary to Members of Parliament, Researcher, Primary School Teacher, and Bank Manager, she began to take writing classes and discovered the joy of writing short stories. At the same time Robbie decided to study for the Bachelor of Arts degree she had always wanted.  This was the start of a new world. She now has many degrees including a Masters in Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism and a Post Graduate Diploma in Writing. Her qualifications provide an excellent background for story writing. At present Robbie teaches writing classes called "Book Writers’ Workshop" with the University of the Third Age (U3A) and is happy to have finally completed her first series of novels. ABOUT THIS BOOK

The first book in the Write your Novel or Memoir Series gave detail of how to set about writing your outline. In this third book I will go into more detail. In particular, more will be said about The Outline and why it is important for you to use one, and I will also provide a range of methods and some templates.

In book 1 — I took readers quickly through the process of beginning to write a book. It stressed that it was vital to begin with writing an Outline. I have done a great deal of research into the subject for my classes over the last couple of years. Readers of this book will benefit from that research. Much of what I have learned has come from the generosity of a number of authors who freely contribute a wealth of knowledge and experience on the Internet.

I hope readers will read carefully what professional authors say and take their advice—at least for first books. It is important that we all find our own way of working and our own style of writing, but these things develop over time, and at first, a new writer’s life will be made much easier with the use of an Outline.

The Outline systems and theories contained herein are all good. Chapter 7 contains a template which students have found most useful. They call it invaluable.
