Write Your First Novel Now. Book 9 - On Publishing - Robbie Kew
ABOUT THIS BOOK
This Little Book aims simply to be a guide to new writers on the subject of publishing. It takes the form of a discussion of the different forms of publishing available in today’s changing market.
Each different form will be discussed and their requirements will be given.
Many new writers, particularly writers of novels, will seek the recognition of a publisher’s acceptance of the quality or saleability of their work. They will need to know how to approach a publisher who will pay them, and this advice is given here.
Others will for whatever reason, be prepared to pay to self-publish their work. While yet others, will seek to use free publishing services. Appropriate advice is given to all of these authors.
It doesn’t aim to be an exhaustive list of publishers, though some publishers and their requirements will be mentioned.
CHAPTER ONE — DIFFERENT FORMS OF PUBLISHING
Once Upon a time
Not so very long ago, the only way to publish a book was through an established publishing house. Writers who succeeded in being accepted by one of these publishers were usually paid an advance followed by royalties.
To be considered, writers had to submit to the publisher of their choice following strict guidelines. These guidelines varied between publishers, so submitting to several was a long, time-consuming process.
In most cases, only a letter and brief synopsis was acceptable. Phone calls were not accepted, and unsolicited manuscripts were usually rejected.
Mostly a writer could only submit to one at a time; then wait a given length of time before receiving a reply.
Rejection letters were the norm. A small percentage of lucky hopefuls would be asked to submit a further portion of their book for further consideration.
After rejection, the book could then be submitted to another publisher following the individual guidelines, which could be quite different.
And so the process went on, taking an inordinate amount of time and effort and pain.
This process still exists.
Some publishers will only accept approaches made through a Literary Agent.
Even to find out who these publishers are, and who accepts what, is a long and complicated process.
But advancing technology combined with the sheer number of thwarted, frustrated writers, has led to other developments in the publishing process.
Then came ‘Vanity’ publishing
Commercially minded printing companies saw the opening and got into the act. You can now publish any book by paying one of these self-publishing printers to do it for you.
The quality of your work is not at issue. Although, as time has gone on the quality of work produced in this way has improved because a writer can pay extra to have
