    ~ Prologue ~

    ~ Cameron ~

He silently stared out of the dirty smeared window, lost in familiar dark thoughts and even darker memories. With the weather reflecting his tumultuous mood, he lost himself to a grey, ominous sky, heavy with the hues of the impending winter.

Cam, I’m tired of this windy shithole, let’s go for a walk.

His heart hammered a wild tattoo, bringing him out of his stupor.

Keeley had stolen into the room and appeared at his side like some tiny, blonde ninja. A tiny, blonde ninja in his favourite navy jumper.

He slammed the lid down on his laptop with rather too much force.

Jesus Keeley, please don’t creep up on me like that.

She jumped, then pouted in her usual needy fashion and he knew there and then that he had to make a clean break from her.

    End this thing between them.

At the beginning he loved her.

    Really loved her.

    He loved everything about her.

Even her annoying little habits, but now every time he was around her, she just seemed to drain the energy from his soul.

The songs he was penning were miserable and he was pretty sure he could release a break up album by Christmas.

He huffed out a frustrated breath and pushed to his feet. Okay, he breathed and headed towards the small kitchen at the rear of the cosy cottage to put his filthy walking boots on.

Keeley traipsed behind him and followed suit.

After shrugging into their thick waterproof coats, they were ready for their expedition. The kitchen door swung shut behind them with the force of a bracing wind that could steal the breath from your lungs.

They walked the first mile of the cliffs in an uncomfortable silence, until he couldn’t stand it anymore.

Letting go of her hand, he shoved his into his deep pockets and decided to lay his cards on the table. Keeley, are you happy?

She stopped walking and grabbed back hold of his hand.

A frown that he used to think was cute appeared between her eyebrows. Yes. I’ve got you, silly. Why wouldn’t I be happy?

He looked away, ground his teeth and locked his jaw in anticipation of what he was going to do.

Aren’t you happy too, Cam? she whispered and when he glanced at her, he saw fat tears slowly rolling down her face.

His stomach lurched violently. Shit. Don’t cry. I didn’t mean to upset you. It’s not you. It’s me. With what happened with Mum, I’m just not in a good place right now.

She let out a muffled sob and he nearly caved in. He opened his mouth and the heavens picked that very moment to open and rain cascaded down onto their exposed faces in heavy rivulets.

Keely regarded him with wide, untamed eyes. No, you can’t leave me. I love you, Cam, she screamed and grabbed onto the front of his coat.

He held her hands in his and pushed her backwards. Keeley, it’s for the best. It’s…it’s over…

A look of thunder rolled over her delicate features before she launched herself at him like a wildcat, scratching his face with her long nails and yanking his hair hard.

Stop it! he screamed and tried his best to calm her down.

Keeley took a swing at him, connecting with his jaw. You bastard! I fucking hate you.

He tried to hold her into his chest as raw pain seared through him in waves, but she took off full pelt towards the sea. Wait! I’m sorry. Come back.

The rain made visibility difficult and she was fast, but within a few minutes he had caught up with her and rugby tackled her to the ground before pinning her down.

    They were
