    ~ Annie ~

She tried to open her eyes, but it was an impossible task.

    And she knew why.

They were both bruised, blackened and swollen shut.

If she let herself cry, the tears would have no form of escape.

In truth, she was all cried out.

    For now.

He’d really lost it this time…

Every other time he had been careful not to hit her in any visible places, but something she had said or done had tipped him over the edge.

She had pretended to be asleep when he’d rolled in at 2 am. He must have been with another woman, but she was past caring.

    They were welcome to him.

    Braden Kelly.

He was the man she thought she would settle down with and have the happy ever after with.

    Handsome and successful.

    A good guy.

All his family loved him and his friends thought that the sun shone out of his backside.

But, she knew the other side of him.

A bone fide, first rate bastard.

Why the hell did she still fight for him?

Why did a small part of her still love him?

She had tried her best to hate him, but she couldn’t.

What sort of a weak, pathetic person did that make her?

When he wasn’t this out of control monster, he was sweet and kind. So, each time, she picked herself up and brushed herself off and told herself it would be the last time.

He always promised that it would be.

    He always lied.

She was preparing herself for the apologies, the flowers, the presents and the crocodile tears that would undoubtedly be flowing like a river.

This time though, she had no intention of waiting around for them.

    She. Was. Done.

Finally, she managed to partly open her eyes, blinking several times. As quietly as she could, she slowly moved away from him.

The sounds of his loud snoring penetrated the dense fog of fear lancing through her bone tired body. Her brain was desperately trying to formulate some kind of escape strategy, before the monster awoke.

Groping around in the darkness, she found her phone on the floor. Luckily he hadn’t smashed this one. Peering over the side of the bed, she scrolled through her contacts and found the one she was looking for. Screwing her eyes to focus, pain throbbed in her head, her chest and stomach. She wouldn’t have been surprised if he had cracked a couple of her ribs judging by the effort it took to breathe.

After typing a brief message to the one person she knew wouldn’t let her down, she exhaled harshly and immediately panicked that she had woken him up, but he snored on loudly, confirming that he was still out for the count.

Holding her breath, she extended her right leg and planted it on the floor. She warily glanced over at him before sliding the rest of her body out of the bed like some highly trained ninja.

She landed silently on the carpet and lay there for several minutes gathering some much needed strength.

Suddenly her phone flashed with a message, illuminating the darkened room. Luckily she had switched it to silence otherwise she would have been in a world of shit.

Holding her breath to steal herself, she waited.

He grunted and rolled over onto her side and patted the empty space several times.

Annie, he muttered before breaking wind and rolling back onto his side of the bed again to resume his loud snoring fest.

    Thank you God.

A hysterical giggle threatened to erupt, but thankfully she pushed it back down and started a GI Joe type manoeuvre towards the hallway. She clasped her phone tightly in her hand and couldn’t believe her luck when she found that the bedroom door was open.

Her crawl continued out onto the landing and when she reached the top of the stairs she straightened up and descended them as quietly as humanly possible.

When her feet hit the cold laminate flooring of the small hallway, she broke out into a run for the kitchen. Once inside the kitchen, she darted for the utility room and opened the tumble dryer grabbing some underwear, leggings and a sweatshirt. After quickly shrugging into them she strained her ears for any sounds from upstairs, but thankfully she heard no movement.

Shoving on a pair of Converse, she grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge and chugged the full contents down.

She raked a hand through her hair and glanced up at the clock on the kitchen wall.

It read 4.10am and she prayed that her friend would get there quickly.

Pure adrenalin and nervous energy coursed through her veins heating her blood to boiling point.

You’re not out of the woods yet Annie.

Her phone flashed with a text.

‘Hi gorgeous, we’ll be five minutes. Love you xx.’

She quickly replied that she was ready and after several deep calming breaths, she opened the kitchen door and padded out into the hallway, straight into Braden’s hard body.

Her hair stood on end as fear prickled her scalp. She opened her mouth to give him some excuse, but no sound came out.

Going somewhere are we? he asked in a deep Southern Irish brogue that used to make her tingle.

Now it made her flesh crawl.

    Come on. Think. Think.

Um, I’ve left my phone at Mum’s house. You know what I’m like, I would forget my head if it wasn’t screwed on, she blurted, and let out a forced laugh.

Her stomach lurched as she saw his jaw tightening. It was an alarm ringing, warning sign that she recognised only too well.

His blue eyes flashed in the semi darkness of the hallway.

Wait a minute, I can smell something. Can you smell it Annie?

Her heart was pounding out of her chest as she stared at him. His face was a barely contained mask of fury. The muscles of his stomach rippled and flexed as his anger rose.

    Err, no…..

    Well I can.

    No, not again. I can’t.

I don’t know what you’re talking about Braden. Go back to bed and I’ll be back in no time, darling.

He made a move towards her, and she flinched, causing the phone to escape from her hoodie pocket and skitter across the floor.

    Please Kat, hurry!

Glancing down he stared at the phone, then arched an eyebrow. His eyes blazed into her like dark blue, swirling, bottomless pools of misery.

Well, well, I’ll tell you what I can smell Annie. I smell bullshit, you lying bitch!

He grabbed a handful of her long hair and yanked it hard, pulling her head back before he slammed her body into the bannister.

Pain seared through her as he pushed up behind her and forced her face against the wooden spindles.

All the air left her lungs as he caged her in, twisting her right arm behind her back.

Please stop Braden. You’re hurting me, she sobbed, trying to calm him down.

He laughed in the low menacing way that she had become familiar with. Leaning his full weight on her, she smelt his sour breath gusting onto her face.

Shut your stupid mouth, you slut.

Her terror and fear ramped up to the next level.

She thought she was going to die.

Please, please. I love you. Please stop.

He chuckled manically. And I love you too. So, I suggest we get back upstairs and you can show me how much you love me darling, he rasped.

Bile rose in her throat at the repulsive thought.

An abrupt loud knock at the door, followed by her best friend’s voice was the sweetest sound she had ever heard.

Annie, it’s me, Kat, Cal’s here with me. Open the door would you?

God, she had been stupid and selfish texting her.

What if she had come alone?

If Cal hadn’t come with her, she would have been petrified for her heavily pregnant friend.

He tightened his grip on her arm. Don’t say a word, or, I’m warning you, I’ll really hurt you.

She summoned energy that she didn’t know she had left.

Kat, help me, please, she cried as loud as she could as he crushed the air out of her body.

    Shut. It. Annie.

He let out a harsh breath and pushed her even further into the staircase.

Kat’s fist pummelled the door nearly putting it through.

What’s happening? Annie sweetheart, let us in.

Squeezing her swollen eyes shut, relentless waves of nausea engulfed her body making her feel light headed and in danger of passing out.

She heard Cal’s deep voice asking her to stand aside and after the noise of the door bursting open, the next thing she saw when she opened her eyes was Cal rugby tackling Braden to the floor.

After taking huge gulps of air, she sagged against the banister, curling her white knuckled fingers around the spindles

You think you’re a big man hurting a beautiful woman like that eh? You’re nothing but a pathetic, worthless coward, Cal shouted before he punched him hard in the face.

Blood sprayed up the walls and onto the floor.

And she took a certain amount of pleasure from seeing it.

Braden took the punch and wisely stayed on the floor curling up into a ball. He was fit and strong, but he was pissed and clearly no match for Cal.

Her best friend rushed forward and pulled her into a welcome bear hug.

Let’s get you out of here.

Thank you Kat. Thank you Cal, she sobbed collapsing into her friend’s warm embrace.

Kat turned to her husband who was struggling to keep a lid on his anger. Cal sweetheart, give him another one from me would you? Oh, and make it nice and hard.

Cal grinned like a Cheshire cat.

He was only too happy to oblige.

    Chapter One

    ~ Nick ~

He took another gulp of his bottle of lager and summoned the courage to finally ask the question that he had been building up to all day.

Nervously picking imaginary fibres from his trousers, he went for it.

So, how is she? he asked Cal as they lounged in the golf bar of The Blue Cove – one of a chain of luxury hotels that his best friend owned.

How is who? Cal exhaled and sat up to face him.

    Annie. How is Annie?

Oh, right. She’s okay. She hasn’t talked about it much, but from what I can gather, it had been going on for about a year.

Jesus Christ, I bet Kat’s on the war path.

Cal chuckled. Yes Nicholas, you’re not wrong there. She wanted to string him up by his balls, cut them off and feed them to him in tiny bite sized pieces, but, get this…without vegetables or gravy.

Oh, that would be dry, he laughed.

She has fire in her belly, my beautiful wife.

It’s the red hair. It’s a proven fact, he informed him seriously.

Well, I’m not complaining. Every day is an adventure with her, he told him before he got that sickening dreamy look on his face.

He wanted to wear that look.

He was kicking the pants off thirty and he craved what Cal had.

    Desperately.

It was time to grow a pair and stop hooking up with women that held no interest for him outside of the bedroom.

Cal had no idea about his wide and varied sexual tastes or that he had slipped easily into the role of a Dom, but since he had met Annie, he hadn’t been interested in any one but her.

He hoped she would make a perfect little submissive.

Pushing a hand through his hair, he rolled his eyes.

Jesus, stop would you? You’re making me jealous of your perfect happy ever after.

Sorry, I’m just so fucking happy.

I know you are and I couldn’t be happier for you. Anyway, how is Kat? Are you leaving her alone now that she’s seven months pregnant?

She’s good. Really good. And what do you think? he replied waggling his eyebrows and winking.

You animal, he replied pushing aside an unwelcome stab of jealousy that spiked through him.

His friend really was a lucky bastard in all things.

A business empire to be envied.

    A beautiful wife.

    A baby on the way.

And, he didn’t swing that way, but even he could see that Cal was one handsome son of a bitch.

Okay, so he had his own well established yacht leasing company, but he was greedy and he wanted the other things too.

Nick, are you still with me?

Yes sorry, I was miles away.

Thinking about Annie again? he teased.

What? No, he shot back quickly.

Actually, I was thinking about setting up a fan club for you.

Okay, chill. How is my favourite god daughter, Miss Mia Darcy doing?

His heart swelled as he thought about his gorgeous five year old little girl. She was a happy accident in a failed relationship that, had thankfully remained amicable. Allison had always been fair with him and he had never stepped over the line.

His daughter was the best thing in his life and he cherished the time he spent with her.

She’s good. Really good. She’s settled into school and she’s started riding that grumpy pony I got for her birthday. The next time I have her, I’ll bring her over to see you guys. But don’t answer her when she asks where babies come from as ever since she saw Kat’s bump, she’s been pestering Allison to explain how the baby got in there, he chuckled.

Cal let out a loud roar of laughter. Oh dear. Well, good luck with that one mate.

Well, I best be off. Please send my best to Annie would you? he said casually.

His friend raised an inquisitive eyebrow.

You have the hots for her don’t you?

No, I’m just being a friend that’s all, he lied unconvincingly.

Cal pushed to his feet and shook his hand.

Whatever Nicholas. I’ll tell her you were asking for her.

See you next week and I’ll thrash your arse next time.

Ah, ever the optimist Mr Darcy, Cal countered.

Don’t forget our card school on Friday Mr Callaghan. You might rule at golf, but your poker face is shit, he laughed before he made a hasty retreat to the car park.

Breathing in deeply, he pondered his future as he strolled out to his brand new red Maserati. He felt the familiar rush of excitement that he experienced every time he got behind the wheel. He loved all of his cars for different reasons, but this one was a recent purchase, and he had fallen head over heels for her.

Starting the engine he listened in awe to the beautiful sound. It was sexy and full of erotic promise.

And, it made him think about Annie all over again.

He hadn’t been able to get her out of his mind since he had met her at Cal and Kat’s wedding a few months before.

Annie Carmichael had quite literally taken his breath away. Her long blonde hair, her sapphire blue eyes, her lovely fresh and innocent face and her slim traffic stopping body. He remembered her full and pouty pink lips that had sent him into a spiral of dirty sex fuelled fantasies of her mouth all over him. She had set alarms off in his body and he had wanted nothing more than to take her back to his suite dominate her, and fuck her over and over again for the rest of the weekend.

But, that was before he knew she had a boyfriend, that she lived with. He hadn’t been at the wedding, and he had no idea why, but he had spent two days covertly lusting after her and watching her every move.

The sway of her hips, the curve of her breasts, the pale creamy skin that he itched to touch and explore.

He was desperate for a taste of her and now he might just be in with a fighting chance.

Releasing his tight grip of the steering wheel, he felt heat and hunger for her surging around his body. No woman had ever affected him this way. He knew what he wanted and he usually just went out there and got it. But she was different and she would need to be handled gently.

Groaning with his desire to claim her as his own, he felt his cock growing hard.

    Jesus.

He didn’t even have to be in her presence.

No, just thinking about her caused familiar heat to rush over him, the flames igniting his raw unashamed wanting of Annie Carmichael.

Shaking his head at his lack of control, he revved the engine and wheel spun out of the car park, spraying gravel everywhere just to piss Cal off.

As he drove home, he thought back to the only time they had met.

    * * *

    ~ Three months before ~

He was nervous, so bloody nervous, and it wasn’t even him getting married.

What if he dropped the rings, or said something too disgusting in his speech?

Right there and then, he made a pact with himself to prop himself at the bar and assume the part of completely wasted wedding bar fly for the remainder of the night, if it all went tits up.

Fidgeting around in his seat, he pulled the too tight collar of his shirt away from his warm neck, and exhaled harshly.

What’s wrong with you? the groom whispered raising an inquisitive eyebrow.

He glanced sideways, not daring to meet his eyes.

It really pissed him off that Cal looked all calm and collected, like Ireland’s answer to Adam Levine.

    Bastard.

    Nothing. Ignore me.

Moments later the opening chords of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born To Run’ cranked up, and everyone in the room pushed to their feet.

They both stood up and as Cal kept his eyes forward, he turned and sneaked at look at the bride.

    She looked beautiful.

Then he took a look at her bridesmaid dressed in a figure hugging off white long dress.

And his breath left him in a heated rush.

Slim, blonde, blue eyed and utterly fucking gorgeous.

Their eyes met, and she gave him a shy smile. His lips quirked up as he returned one to her, and his earlier nerves disappeared to be replaced by another emotion.

    Pure red hot lust.

It slammed into him full force and he couldn’t take his eyes off her for the duration of the wedding ceremony.

He pulled his shit together and performed his best man duties, then after the ceremony, they moved into an adjoining room that had been lavishly decorated in subtle tones of cream and cornflower blue.

After the meal, he got the dreaded best man speech out of the way, then it was time for the first dance.

Cal led Kat to the dance floor, where they smooched to Harry Connick Jnr’s ‘It had to be you.’

As he watched them move across the floor, he felt someone standing to his left. Glancing up, he saw the gorgeous bridesmaid.

She smiled shyly at him. Hi, I think we’re supposed to dance together. Do you fancy it?

He knew what he fancied doing, and it wasn’t dancing.

Yeah, sure, he stuttered and stood up.

Pulling his jacket straight, he led her to the floor and took her in his arms. She smelt good, and the way her body felt against his felt good. Very good.

What’s your name? he whispered as they moved slowly around the floor.

    Annie.

Nice to meet you Annie, I’m Nick.

    I know. Kat told me.

Are you having a good time?

Her lips brushed against his right ear. I am now, she said quietly.

    Me too.

His cock started to harden as her slim frame brushed up against his body as the heat of his desire pulsed through him.

It’s warm in here. I’m just going to take my jacket off.

He quickly flung his jacket onto an empty chair, and took her back into his arms. As she pressed up against him, he could feel her nipples rubbing over his chest, and her breathing became shallow.

His cock grew to nearly full capacity, and he tried his best to talk it out of misbehaving itself.

Far too quickly the song was over and they broke apart.

She stared up into his eyes. Do you want to get some air?

    Yes.

They wandered hand in hand through a set of French doors. The bride and groom clocked them and grinned.

Isn’t it a beautiful night Nick?

It is, he breathed as he fought against the urge to grab her, kiss her, and take her up to his suite.

They walked a good bit into the extensive gardens, still hand in hand. After a while, he saw a love seat and pulled her over to sit down.

Sitting side by side, they looked up at the stars and settled into a comfortable silence.

He eventually broke it. You staying here tonight?

Yes, but I need to head off early in the morning. I need to get back.

Me too. If I’m not too hungover, he chuckled.

Yes, I think I’ve drunk my body weight in Prosecco today, so I’m expecting to feel rough tomorrow, she laughed.

He was dying to kiss her, but he had no idea how she would react.

Emboldened by too many Jack Daniels and coke, he decided to go for it.

Turning her towards him, he brought his hand up and gently stroked her face.

    You’re beautiful Annie.

Thank you. So are you. Are you a male model or something?

    No, he laughed.

    Well, you could be.

Thank you, but I couldn’t be. My eyes are different colours, my eye teeth are too long, and check out my weird ear lobes. They’re huge.

She grinned at him and inspected them. I really like your eyes, and you could always dress up as a vampire.

He chuckled and took her hand in his. And the ear lobes?

Mm, your ear lobes might be on the generous side, but hey, you could grow your hair, she giggled.

Good idea. I’ll do that when Dolce & Gabbana approach me.

She laughed and glanced back towards the hotel. We should be getting back inside.

Okay, but before we go… I really want to kiss you Annie.

Her breath hitched as he brought up his other hand to cup her face and her tongue darted out to wet her lips. They looked even more kissable.

She didn’t reply, she just closed her eyes.

He brought his mouth against hers, and licked around the seam of those soft, lush lips. Her hands came up and speared into his hair, holding him in place.

He let his tongue probe into her warm mouth and twist with hers. Her tongue slid along his, as the kiss deepened, into a lash of pleasure that took him to another place. Their kiss was hot, passionate and intense, and he never wanted it to end. He kissed her like a starving man, devouring her gorgeous mouth.

She tasted sweet, and he wanted her.

    He
