    ~ Dominic ~

The large, beefy hand came down once more.

    Hard.

His heart was pounding right out of his chest, and he was fighting for every, single breath.

    Please.

    No more.

He put his skinny arms up to shield himself, but it was all in vain.

Sharp pain surged through his body, and he felt stinging tears gathering in his eyes before they started trickling down his face.

    Daddy, no Daddy…please…

His alarm blared into the room as he woke up from, yet another nightmare and he felt his large body propelling itself upwards, his hands clenched instinctively into fists.

His breath came out in loud, ragged, bursts as he pushed both hands through his hair and rubbed them down his warm face.

Sweat dripped down the back of his neck and between his pecs.

Grabbing a full bottle of water from his bedside table, he chugged it straight down.

He craved the morning light, a safe place to find himself and lose the pain of the darkness within him.

Squinting at the clock he saw that it was 5.35am.

    Time to run.

Swinging his legs out of the bed, he quickly darted to the bathroom, had a pee, and brushed his teeth before shoving on some underwear and running trousers.

After finding a black t-shirt that passed the sniff test and didn’t smell too bad, he shrugged into it and grabbed a navy gym hoodie that was slung over a door handle.

Once he had put a dark beanie hat on, he was ready.

He thundered down the stairs and exited the front door of the building. It swung noisily behind him, and he knew that Mrs Ross would be crawling right up his arse about it the next time she saw him.

Stepping out into the early September day, he did a few quick, warm up exercises and looked at his ancient watch. Heading towards the park he decided on which route he would take. This particular one usually took around the twenty five minutes mark, but he needed to shave some time off it.

It was a brisk, fresh morning and the sun was just starting to wake up. His warm breath puffed out in clouds as he admired the view out over the water.

Everyone knew that Edinburgh was a wonderful city and in the dawn light she was beautiful.

As he set off towards Commercial Street, he quickly got into a good pace, then he ran past the Royal Yacht Britannia and gave her his customary nod.

Why do you nod at a ship? Weirdo.

With sweat running down his back, he hit the home stretch and accelerated the last few yards to beat his personal best by he reckoned two minutes.

    Yes.

He came to a stop and checked his watch confirming that he was right.

As he punched the air, an odd feeling passed over him.

An odd feeling, he knew only too well.

He knew she was there before he even saw her.

    Then, he turned around.

    And there she was.

Other than them, the park was empty.

They circled each other like two lonely wolves stalking their prey.

She was tiny, maybe just a touch over five foot, but no more.

For the last month or so, he had seen her every morning and she always looked like she wanted to talk to him.

And he was dying to talk to her, but he wouldn’t, he couldn’t. She was gorgeous, far too good for him, way out of his league.

As he turned around to make his way back to his flat, a black and white cocker spaniel bounded over to him, wagging its tail energetically.

He crouched down and patted the young dog.

Hello and what’s your name, wee one?

The dog rolled onto its back, and he tickled the soft downy fur of its stomach.

It’s Molly, a female voice quietly informed him.

She had a breathless lilt when she spoke, and he couldn’t place the accent; American or Canadian…he never really knew the difference.

After turning slightly, he looked up to meet huge, dark blue eyes as they stared into his face. The eyes belonged to the mysterious girl that had been watching him.

    He took in her appearance.

Her face was bare of makeup and her lush lips were full, with a small crease along the bottom a bit like Angelina Jolie.

    She was…perfect.

And still way out of his league.

She had on a small woollen hat and her long, very dark hair hung down in long, thick waves.

After bending down to fasten the dog to an extendable lead, she straightened up.

He pushed to his feet and looked down at her.

You, okay? she breathed and touched his arm as if to check he was real.

Cold panic seeped into his veins, stealing his breath. He hated people touching him and he started to breathe heavily as the fear threatened to claim him,

    Pull yourself together Dominic.

He instinctively moved away from her and rubbed his hands down his face.

Yes, I’m fine thanks. I’m just back from a run.

She smiled serenely, and he loved the way that smile lit up her beautiful face.

    I know. I watch you.

    What?

His stomach turned over as he looked at her.

    You do?

She rolled the left sleeve of her coat up and glanced down.

Yup, I watch you run every day, and if I’m not wrong, you’ve shaved two minutes off your personal best.

He couldn’t resist leaning down and looking into her gorgeous eyes.

Are you a stalker? he whispered.

What? No, she giggled and pulled her coat closer around her neck.

He caught a waft of her light, citrusy perfume and it made him feel lightheaded.

So, Miss American Pie, do you have a name?

She thrust her small, gloved hand out.

    It’s Francesca. Frankie…to my friends.

Am I a friend? he teased not releasing her hand.

She grinned up at him revealing a row of straight, white teeth.

    Mm, I don’t know…yet. What’s your name?

He absently scratched his prickly chin with his other hand.

It’s Dominic. Dom to my friends.

She giggled in that soft feminine way that girls have.

Oh, like in The Fast and The Furious. You know? Dominic Toretto? He was big, sexy and buff…like you…

    She thinks I’m sexy?

He felt his chest puffing up at the compliment. He thought he was pretty average looking with a half decent body that took a lot of work to maintain, but he had never, ever seen himself as sexy.

She nervously bit her juicy, pink lips as he chuckled and shook her hand again. She was so small next to him, her head only reaching up to his shoulders.

Well, Dominic or Dom, I better make tracks. I’ll see you around.

He didn’t want her to go.

    Bye.

He stared after her as she slowly made her way back up the hill towards New Haven.

    Please turn back.

She turned around and waved at him and he realised that it was now or never.

Hey, do you fancy a coffee sometime?

Thankfully, she jogged back down to him.

You have a phone? she asked, and he couldn’t take his eyes off her eyes, her mouth, her everything.

Yeah, he mumbled and grabbed it out of his pocket.

She pulled her glove off with her teeth and he stared trance like at her as desire for her rose like a fierce tidal wave from deep inside him. Francesca passed the phone back to him and he shoved it back into his pocket.

Here you go. Give me a call sometime, she breathed then grinned widely.

I will. Catch you later, American pie.

    See you, big guy.

He watched as she quickly walked to god knows where.

Before she disappeared out of sight, she turned back around.

    Oh, and Dominic?

    Yes?

    I’m Canadian…
