Introduction
James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States of America. He had two consecutive terms in the White House, between 1817 and 1825. Having been ambassador, Senator and Secretary of State before attaining the highest office in the country, Monroe became known above all for his diplomatic talents, as well as the Missouri Compromise and the doctrine that bears his name.
The period spanning his two terms has been described as the Era of Good Feelings
due to the relative political unity and prosperity that followed the two wars between the USA and Great Britain (the American War of Independence, also known as the American Revolutionary War, from 1775 to 1783, and the War of 1812 from 1812 to 1815). The president made the most of this favourable context to expand American territory towards the south and the west. The implementation of the Monroe Doctrine, which continues to govern American foreign policy even today, gave the country a leading place on the international political stage during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
On the national level, however, the president had to deal with fierce tensions between the abolitionist North and the slaveholding South. He managed to soothe these tensions for a few years thanks to the Missouri
