About this ebook

Keen to learn but short on time? Get to grips with the life of Georges Lemaître in next to no time with this concise guide.

50Minutes.com provides a clear and engaging analysis of the work of Georges Lemaître. An unlikely combination of a priest and a physicist who was responsible for the theories of the expansion of the universe and the primeval atom, which today we accept and know collectively as the Big Bang theory, Lemaître was not widely credited or recognised for his theories when he first developed them. It was not until the accidental discovery of cosmic radiation many years later that the scientific community finally came to accept this man and his ideas.

• Find out about his life and determination to reconcile his Catholic faith with his interest in physics
• Learn about the accidental discoveries that eventually led to the confirmation of his theories

Georges Lemaître - 50minutes

Key information

Born: 17 July 1894 in Charleroi, Belgium.

Died: 20 June 1966 in Leuven, Belgium.

Main achievements: various theories that enabled advances in research on the universe and its origins, such as those on the expansion of the universe (1927) and the primeval atom (1931).

Impact of his research: the Big Bang theory is now widely accepted and has led to the creation of a new field of research: modern cosmology.

Introduction

Man has always sought to understand the world and, by extension, the universe surrounding it. Throughout the centuries, various theories have emerged depending on the customs of each period and have given rise to conceptions of the universe that were not always in line with religious and political authorities. Nobody would have thought in the time of Galileo (Italian astronomer and physicist, 1564-1642), condemned by the Church for his writings on heliocentrism, that it would be a Belgian priest, Georges Lemaître, who would be responsible for the Big Bang theory, which is still widely accepted.

His ‘hypothesis of the primeval atom’, put forward in 1931, dates the origin
