Astronomy as we know it today had its start in Europe around the start of the 17th century. The Greeks and the Muslims had made discoveries earlier, but they were shackled by a conviction that the Earth was the centre of the cosmos, and by a confusion between the roles of astronomy and astrology. Those ideas had persisted for moqe than a millennium.
