    Introduction

    The Battle of Gettysburg was fought between the troops of the Union and the Confederate troops during the American Civil War. Won by the northern troops, the ground combat is often considered one of the turning points of the war and one of the bloodiest of the conflict. On both sides, losses were particularly high.

    The American nation, which was still relatively new, was in a deep crisis in the 1860s that saw many states pitted against one another over the topic of slavery: the states located in the north wanted to abolish slavery, while those in the south opposed this fiercely, fearing for their economy which was based on an agrarian society, where the exploitation of slaves was paramount. This quarrel gave rise to two clans: the Union, which included the northern states, and the Confederacy, which consisted of 11 states that
