Why did We Fight the Civil War?
The Civil War is also known as the War Between the States. The war was fought over differences between northern states and southern states. There were three main differences.
Different Economies
By the mid-1800s, the North and South had developed different economies, or ways of making money. Most people who lived in the North had jobs in manufacturing and trading. They made things and sold them.

Some people in the South owned plantations and grew crops such as tobacco and cotton. A plantation contained 100 or more slaves. In the South, about 125 landowners in each state possessed this wealth. Northerners did not need slave labor to run the factories.
Different Views on States’ Rights
People in the North thought laws for the country should be created by the federal, or national, government. People in the South did not agree. They thought states should have the right to make their own laws, even if they were different from the federal laws. In particular, Southerners wanted to protect their right to own slaves.
