A CONFLICTED COUNTRY
It was the mid-1800s in the United States. The North and South were at a standoff. The states could not agree on the issue of slavery. Northern states wanted slavery to be abolished. Southern states wanted to keep slavery.
In the North most people viewed slavery as cruel. Black men and women had been shipped to the United States against their will. They were forced into slavery. They did backbreaking work on large Southern plantations. Many were abused by their owners.
In the South feelings about slavery weren’t so simple. Plantation owners needed slaves to help with their farms. Without slave labor, they couldn’t make much money. The Southern way of life would collapse. This fear
