CHAPTER 1
WITH HONOR AND COURAGE
The Civil War (1861-1865) was the United States’ bloodiest conflict. Eleven states had seceded from the Union by 1861. They formed the new Confederate States of America. Confederates believed each state should have more power. They also wanted to keep slavery because their economy depended on it.
More people lived in the Northern states. These states had more jobs and more money. This meant the Union had more power in Congress. Many Northerners did not agree with slavery and wanted it abolished.
The Union and the Confederacy could not agree. When war broke out in 1861, Union troops fought to keep the country together. Confederate troops went to war over states’ rights and slavery.
