Shakeela Kingzley is a South African writer and filmmaker who has profound love for the arts. She received her BA Degree in Motion Picture Medium in 2010 and has since worked in the South African film industry and explored the world whenever adventure called her soul.

“Writing this piece of art was a beautiful journey in itself. In my mindfulness I discovered that I am a translator - when I receive the visuals I need to translate it into the English language as best I can so that when you read it you see it and feel it.”

When I decided to compile this book, so many things in my life aligned. Some poems go as far back as five years ago and some as recent as the editing phase. I finally decided to stop hiding my mind and who I am. I brought myself home.

First off, I would like to thank my mother: you have been the greatest pillar of strength and encouragement throughout my life. You taught me how to connect, awaken and expand my mind. The more time I spend with you the more I realise why I chose you. You raised me to be whole. Thank you, I love you.

My cousin, Shiraz, who is more like my sister, for years I have called you the living definition of the word ‘joy’, thank you for always bringing explosions of joy into my life and encouraging my writing.

My closest friends (also more like my sisters) Aneesah, thank you for always being there for me – through every highlight, relationship, break up and death – you have always been my first phone call in these situations and I am so grateful to have you. Ilhaam, thank you for dreaming big with me - two eight-year-old girls ready to take on the world and now watching these dreams manifest, thank you for your motivation and encouragement in every aspect of my life. Yumna, Nashreen, Naeema, Razaana, Shakeera, Leena, Samiera and this list could go on for ages if I do not stop now – Thank you for bringing so
