    Early Years

Pauline Lucille Gomez was born on March 29, 1920, the first child to Ramon and Josefita Ortiz-Gomez, in Moriarty, New Mexico. Her family's history in the New Mexico area can be traced back to the late 1600s, when her four times great-grandfather, military hero Nicolas Ortiz Nino Ladron de Guevera, came here from Spain with Spain's General DeVargasto, to help regain lands lost during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. After Spain regained control of the New Mexico lands, Nicolas held military titles in the new lands and settled in his new home to raise his six children.

Another ancestor, Don Pedro Bautistra Pino, was a most successful merchant on the Camino Real and led a privileged life. His father, too, was a successful merchant from Mexico. Don Pedro served in many government positions in the Santa Fe area for decades. He bought interests in other businesses and land. By the time of his death in 1829, he was considered to be one of the wealthiest men (if not the wealthiest) in the Province of New Mexico.

In 1810, Don Pedro was honored when he was chosen by lot from three of the highest men receiving the highest votes to represent the Province of New Mexico in Cazid, Spain, at the very first Cortez (congress) for Spain's newly-organized elected body. He was the first representative who had been born in New Mexico to be elected to attend the Cortez.

He published a book to help his fellow delegates from Spain and its other colonies understand the poor and backwards province of New Mexico. It was entitled, Exposition. It was considered at that time and for decades after to be one of the clearest pictures
