INTRODUCTION
I just have to say right up front that Charleston is my favorite town in America. I’ll admit, I may be prejudice since I am from the South Carolina Lowcountry, but you don’t have to take my word for it. Do a Google search and you’ll see that the media and millions of visitors agree. Charleston has received every award imaginable, from Prettiest Small Town
to Best City in America
. There is so much to see and do that you can only hope to skim the surface during your initial visit.
In fact, it took me twice as long to write this book as any book I’ve written in this series. The reason being that Charleston has so many historical sites (It is one of America’s oldest cities), museums, festivals, activities, and tours. Charleston is also one of the most haunted cities in America, so there are lots of ghost walks and graveyard tours. What’s more, there are several renowned beach resorts and barrier islands within a few minutes’ drive from Charleston.
For those of you who scour the Internet before every trip searching for anything out of the ordinary, you won’t have to look far this time. Charleston is full of charm and quirkiness. I’m going to show you authentic Charleston, which includes Gullah tours, Hoodoo, graveyard tours, shrimp shacks, pirates, and much more!
I also reveal the best rooftop bar, best place to go for dessert, best souvenir shop, best plantation, best beach resort, and more. Additionally, I’ll share unique experiences with you, including spending the night on the USS Yorktown , attending flight academy, a store devoted exclusively to Moon pies®, the most unusual festival (even for South Carolina!), how you can participate in a paranormal investigation of one of Charleston’s most haunted sites, and more.
One piece of advice I’d like to share is to plan ahead. Charleston is one of the most popular destinations in America. The city gets more than eight million visitors a year. So if you want to participate in a particular festival or special event or visit during peak season, you need to make reservations as soon as possible. Only small groups are permitted for some tours and attractions, so that’s another reason you should pre-book. I suggest making a list of your top five or ten things you want to do for sure during your visit. Then you should create a rough itinerary so you know when to make reservations and buy tickets. Make sure you understand refund policies in case you need to change or cancel a reservation.
If you are planning to visit other places in coastal South Carolina, you may want to get my book,
