Get away for... THE WEEKEND!
The first day had not started well. I set off late, smashed my nearside wing mirror avoiding an oncoming juggernaut, probably parked in the wrong car park, probably not put enough money in the meter and then missed the bus to the starting point of my walk.
The next bus, an hour later, deposited me outside the Ilchester Arms in Abbotsbury and I set off at a steady three miles an hour on the path alongside Chesil Beach.
Now a sign was telling me that my expected eight-mile afternoon walk will, in fact, be 10 miles! To make matters worse, the path has turned to deep gravel and I have slowed to a leg-sapping crawl. The sun is beating down mercilessly and a reed bunting is jeering at me from the safety of his reed bed. At this rate, the parking ticket will have expired and my ‘van will be locked in overnight.
At last, after an exhausting hour, the path diverts through pleasant green pastures. And, for the final few miles
