Waterfall Hikes in Southern British Columbia - Steve Tersmette

      CHAPTER 1

      East Kootenay

The East Kootenay region is a long north–south valley and home to the Columbia and Kootenay rivers. The region is bordered by the Rocky Mountains and the Great Divide to the east, the Trans-Canada corridor to the north, the Purcell Mountains to the west and the United States border to the south. Within this area are numerous provincial parks as well as the gem that is Kootenay National Park.

Highway 3 traverses the southern portion of the region, providing travellers both an east–west route near the US border and access to southern Alberta via the Crowsnest Pass. Highway 93/95 runs north– south and facilitates connection with the Trans-Canada Highway as well as providing access to Alberta via Banff National Park.

Cranbrook is the largest city and economic hub in the region, offering plenty of amenities for travellers. With that being said, most communities in the region have extensive services, including fuel, groceries and accommodations. Additional towns along Highway 3 providing full amenities include Elkford, Sparwood and Fernie. Towns on the Highway 93/95 corridor that offer full services include Kimberley, Canal Flats, Fairmont, Invermere and Radium.
