    Sixty-three years of war had taken its toll on everyone in Rudrash. Chisa stared out over the city. The darkness hid the many crumbled buildings around the center of town where the rich and powerful had lived until the War consumed everything. They were gone now, driven to live in the slums where the magic protection spells his Father had created were strongest.

    Nothing could get through there, not even the bombardment.

    Father had worked so hard to protect Chisa. Their home, Shiraida House, was still the safest place in the world even though they had lost the War. Chisa could go there, could walk back into the garden and then up the stairs to their tiny bedroom. If only his hip would cooperate with the stairs. He remembered bounding up the stairs with Father as a child, as a teen. Taking them slower as an adult. Now.

    Well. He would be safe in Father's house. Always safe there though the thought of it made him tilt his head back and shut his eyes against the tears that burned to fall.

    It would never be home again now that Father was dead. Eighty-two years. Father had lived eighty-two years and fought to protect Chisa the entire time. Everything he'd done tied back to making sure that Chisa stayed safe no matter what the Unspoken attempted to do to him.

    He'd created magical souls, worked miracles, all to keep Chisa from harm.
