About this ebook

Emerson Smith’s aspirations of becoming a real life Sam Spade were realized when she helped local police solve the murder of the man next door. The question is, however, can Emerson really handle life as an amateur detective, or was her first cracked case no more than a fluke?

When aspiring author and full-time dog-sitter Emerson, heads out to the local dog park, it doesn’t take long for her to notice a mysterious stranger hanging around the park perimeter. Ready to put her sleuthing skills to the test once more, Emerson starts to ask questions…questions that attract a lot of attention.

Emerson’s best friend Charlie begs her to leave well enough alone, but when Emerson keeps pressing for answers, she gets a lot more than she bargained for.

    Chapter 1

Emerson pulled the leashes, but it was pointless, both Monty and Carmine refused to budge.

Why is it that you can work miracles with everyone else’s dogs, but your two just do whatever they want? Charlie asked, looking back at the mastiff and the bulldog who both sat stubbornly on the sidewalk.

Because I have two of the most stubborn dogs in the history of the world! Emerson said breathlessly as she wrapped the leashes around her hand and tried once again to pull. Carmine grunted as he was almost shifted by her efforts, but at 210lbs, Monty wasn’t going anywhere, and Emerson knew it.

So... Charlie took a few steps backward until she was beside Emerson, what happens if he doesn’t want to move? She asked. Emerson shrugged and sighed with exasperation.

Then we wait until he does... Emerson lowered herself down to the ground and sat cross-legged. Charlie’s poodle, Fifi, immediately jumped into her lap. Seeing this, Monty’s ears perked up, and he cocked his head as he watched the small white dog bathing his owner’s face. He grunted and slowly got to his feet. His eyes shifted to Charlie’s in a look of betrayal before he padded over and nudged Emerson with his bullhead. In a show of solidarity, Carmine got to his feet and plodded over beside Monty.

Jealousy is a great motivator... Charlie laughed. Leaning down, she picked Fifi up just in time to avoid being crushed as Monty plopped himself in Emerson’s lap.

    Monty! No! Emerson
