About this ebook

Emerson Smith has always fancied herself something of a sleuth, but when the chance for some real sleuthing arises, her skills are put to the test!

An aspiring author and full-time dog-sitter, Emerson is the kind of neighbor everyone wishes they had. She always picks up after her dogs and she never fails to welcome neighborhood newcomers with a freshly baked pie. Recently, however, Emerson has noticed that one of her elderly neighbors, the owner of an ornery English bulldog named Carmine, has gone missing.

When a new face shows up in the old man’s home, Emerson is determined to get to the bottom of things. The question is, is Emerson as much of a sleuth as she aspires to be or has she seen the last of the old man and the cantankerous Carmine?

Emerson read voraciously as she sipped her overly milky tea. When she got to the end of the page, she struggled to turn it over without putting down her mug. Her lack of coordination quickly caught up with her and the book flopped closed.

Really?! She huffed, letting the book slide to the side of her lap. Monty looked up at her momentarily from his place in front of the fire, grumbled deeply at the interruption, and returned to his mid-afternoon nap. Sorry, did I disturb you? She said, rolling her eyes. You have to be the laziest dog I've ever owned, Monty. I know they say mastiffs are lazy, but you take the cake! Right on cue, Monty let out another deep grumble as he repositioned his head on his paws and squeezed his eyes closed tightly.

Emerson had been walking Carmine since he was just a pup. Now that he was ten years old, he had developed a rather cantankerous personality and seemed to know that it was Emerson who worked for him, and not the other way around.

I don't suppose you want to join us? Emerson asked, looking expectantly at Monty. He didn't even acknowledge her presence, let alone give her any kind of response. "That's what
