    Chapter One

Everyone has a story to tell and mine is not different my name is Tuesday Green and this is my story. I am your average working person no one would have ever thought that I could be capable of murder? Everyone, asks the same question why? What made a mild mannered woman snap?

My mother did the best she could with three kids her name is Rachel Green and she starts her day as usual gardening trying to make ends meet. When has life ever been fair or easy for that matter? My Momma knows before the day ends, she has to face a man that humiliates ridicules and treats her like trash, but she still held firm that this man has potential. Mom continues working in her garden pulling at the weeds as us children play in the large yard. Benjamin is the youngest son and he is running towards her.

She wipes the earth away from her hands. On bent knees, she waits for her son’s arrival. Momma can we please play with the water hose, Papa is not home yet. He gushes so excited to play with the water hose. I remember my little brother asking mother and she smiles down at the small upturned face and agrees even though she knows her husband Raymond will have a fit.

Mom ponders what else she can do to distract her son. She grins at him and suggests making mud pies. Benjamin is ecstatic with joy; he shakes his small head in agreement. Together they dig the hole and fill it with water, and Benjamin begins making his mud pies. Mother calls to us older children. Elijah is the oldest son, and I am the middle child. Mom nicknames Elijah, the worrier, because he was so nervous.

Elijah is twelve years old and smart but he is too afraid to let anyone know. I am ten years old. I am quiet, reserved but I act much older than my young years and last but not least Benjamin, five years old and the baby of the family. Elijah answers our mother's call. Yes momma, you need me to help with something? Yes Elijah, you and Tuesday carry the buckets of water and I will plant the seeds. God willing we will have some sort of vegetables with our meals. Mom takes an uneven breath she needs a

Drink badly, but she is trying to kick the habit for our sake. I could tell from the look on mother’s face she was struggling with her drinking problem but at least she was trying to quit and that effort alone prove how much she loved us children.

Mom continues walking toward us and she kneels down then plants the seeds while Elijah and I pour the water. As soon as we were finished planting the seeds Raymond was pulling in the driveway. Benjamin hears the car rattling up the driveway! He immediately runs over to our mother and wraps his small arms around her leg as he hides his face. He is afraid he will get another whipping, Benjamin never knew why he got so many whippings he always tried to stay away from trouble.

Raymond slams the car door. He was pissed off, another rough day at the mill. He kiss butt all day long to provide for his family, and what does he receive in return for his labors, a house full of worthless people without any potential all depending on his blood and sweat. He stumps toward the house looking for Mom where is she? A grim look crossed his face he is not going to tolerate any excuses all he knows is his dinner had better not be late again or she would suffer the consequence for her laziness. I remember everyone going still listening to the sound of Raymond yelling at the top of his lungs, Where is everybody? Why is the kitchen floor not moped?

Then I heard him yelling out my name, Tuesday, you get here this instant! He bellows. I could hear Raymond loud and clear deep down inside I always knew that me and my brothers were used as pawns in Raymond’s twisted mind. I look at my mother before answering. Mom already knew trouble was on the way. I could see the worry on my mother’s face and I hurry to answer the angry man. Yes Papa, what is it? Raymond turns in my direction.

He was meaner than a snake. He rolls his eyes then begins the verbal attack on me. You lazy little ingrate, I slave all day long and you bastards cannot even keep my house clean. Raymond screams at the top of his lungs at the girl. My mom hears the tirade and runs into the room and stands next to me. Raymond enough leave her alone. Tuesday has been helping me all day. As soon as my mother finished pleading her case, his temper snaps. He would not tolerate Mom chastising him in front of the children. He forgets about me for the moment. He turns away from the frighten child rolls his eyes heavenward then vents his frustration on my mom. Without warning, his hands go around Mom’s throat.

His eyes bulge out their sockets looking like a man possessed. How many times have I told you to keep your trap shut when I am talking to the kids? You thought I was playing, well look at you now bitch gasping for breath. He curses, and applies pressure cutting off her breathing. A wicked gleam of pleasure enters his eyes. He was enjoying watching her eyes bulge out of their sockets.

Mom was gasping for breath, and she lifts her hands to pry his fingers loose from around her throat. Raymond shoves her and she tumbles to the ground. I stand there in horror watching this man choke my mother half to death. All I could do was release the scream I am holding inside. I was trembling with fear and anger as I ran to my mother's side. Raymond was so blind with anger he did not care that the children watched. He beat on our mother right in front of us then he suddenly stops. He realize we seen the whole incident so he uses threats to keep us in order. Things are gonna change around here. You better get used to the idea! I was by my mother’s side on the floor hugging her close. I was sick and tired of Raymond and the way he abuses my mother. I made my mind up that very day. I gathered all the courage I could muster, it was like someone else was speaking but I faced Ray and my eyes were filled with malice.

I hope you die! I hate you, and I hate that momma won't make you leave us alone! Raymond is shocked by the girl’s courage and he pauses to look at the child who challenged his authority. The respect for her courage is short lived as Ray’s anger replaced admiration and his temper knew no bounds. With one large hand, Ray slaps me hard across the face, the blow staggers me. It did not matter to Ray that I was a ten old girl. He uses his free hand, and grabs me by the arm.

Raymond drags me by the back of my clothing toward the strap hanging on the wall. I knew what was about to happen that wall was so familiar to me and my siblings. It was the place Ray used to whip us until the blood ran out of our bodies. Once he has the razor strap, I could do nothing but tremble from the force of the strap cutting into my flesh. I grit my teeth against the pain but even that did not help as the agonizing sound of terror and despair escaped my lips. Ray continues beating on me until he draws blood. Elijah holds on to our little brother as fear grips his very soul. My sweet mother Mom is on her feet placing her frail body between me and Raymond, as he continues to weld the strap.

The strap missed hitting me but makes contact with my mother’s face. Mom winced as she feels the belt strap burning her flesh not even the pain would stop her from protecting her child. My mom covered me with her slim body enduring the pain. This act of love infuriates Raymond further, and he continues beating on Mom like a mad man.

The strap cut into Mom’s cheek, and the pain is excruciating but she holds on to me protecting me from the lash. I could hear Elijah and Benjamin squeal in terror; both boys are afraid and unable to help us. Raymond finally stops swinging the strap, and the augment begins with Momma. Raymond yells for us to leave the room, and I stopped in my tracks to plead with mother to come with us. Momma, please leave him, he is hurting all of us please just send him away. Shut your trap Tuesday and get out of the room! Raymond Yells. The children scurry out the room. Mom prepares for what is to come next. Raymond wasted no time pouncing on Mom with both hands around her throat he chokes and beats her so severely mom thought she would die from suffocation.

I could hear the sound of furniture overturning and my mother screams of terror. Mom could not believe the screams were coming from within soon she could not breathe and she drifts away into silence, it was a peaceful bliss from passing out. The next morning she is beyond recognition. Tears slip from her eyes as she sits at the kitchen table nursing bruises and a black eye. She tries to convince herself that this was her fault. Maybe she deserved it; maybe she brought this on herself.

Even in her pain and misery, she was not convinced that any woman deserves such treatment, but what could she do?

She was trapped, no education and no money. Her tears increase streaming down her face. How could she protect herself and her children?

The children are at school, Mom has thought of leaving Raymond a million times no matter how much she wants to believe he would change no change had come, and things keep getting worst. She has family in New Jersey she could stay with her sister if she chose. The more Mom thought about it the better the idea sounds. She could get herself a job and move the children to safety away from Raymond and his beatings.

She could be free of it all. Mom walks to the store to purchase a newspaper and searches the want ads. She knows that her job experience is limited but she is sure there is something available. Times were hard and only a couple of waiter jobs were open she clutches at the collar of her coat, tightening it around her neck, and walks toward places of employment. After several refusals, she lands a job waitressing.

Mom holds her head up high there was light at the end of the tunnel. She continues the journey home. Mom would keep the job secrete, and in a couple of months there would be enough money to move her family. All she has to do is keep the peace a little longer, and then make an escape. Mom finishes her chores she cleans house washes laundry and prepares the meal. She was careful not to give Raymond any reason to complain or start a fight with us children. She would do whatever it takes to keep the peace until she was able to escape with the kids. A couple of weeks passed without a problem; so far, everything is going according to plan.

Mom spends her time with us children she caters to Raymond's every need she is determined to leave him. Benjamin is outside playing while Elijah and I work on our homework. Mom relaxes for a couple of minutes. Her bruises are fading and she feels better. Today is payday and Raymond finishes his work and goes to the bar with a couple of his coworkers. The men enter the establishment and sit at the bar.

Raymond tries to impress his coworkers, he brags about keeping a woman in her place. I'll tell you Joe, the only thing a woman is good for is to satisfy a man in bed, after that they are useless. The other men bellow with laughter. Joe Ross and Hartley Tanner were used to Raymond and his jibes; they both know that Raymond is a want to be. Hartley puts his two cents in, Damn right Raymond now that is something we both agree on. I had to set my woman straight. She was bitching about me not helping around the house. I told her a man's job is to bring home the bacon and that is all.

There was another round of laughter; Hartley orders another round of drinks. The men sit in the small bar filling themselves with beer and liquor. A couple of hours slip by, and the men become loud and intoxicated, harassing anyone that enters the establishment. They became so obnoxious that the owner asks the three of them to leave his bar. Harley was the first to voice his opinion, Who in the hell do you think you are, asking us to leave? This place is a dump anyways; I can spend my dollars elsewhere.

He was glaring at the owner. Raymond put a hand on Harley’s shoulder, Come on Harley let's blow this dump. The owner breathes a sigh of relief, at least they were leaving he would not have to call the cops. The men stagger out the bar into the street, talking loud laughing at their own jokes. Raymond suggests another bar around the corner, but Harley only talks a good game he decides to take himself home because the old lady would beat his ass if he shows up late. They stumble into their vehicles. Raymond was the first to pull out of the parking lot. He is barely able to drive, but he has done this a thousand times today is no different. A couple of miles down the road Ray begins weaving over the yellow line into oncoming traffic and he tries to slam on the brakes before impact takes place, however Ray is too late and the vehicles collide.

The driver in the other car received the full impact leaving their vehicle smashed beyond recognition. The front end was crushed like paper confining its passengers inside. The air becomes dark with smoke as it fills the air. Ray hears the sound of a woman screaming loudly she could be heard for miles. The occupants are pinned behind the wheel and the woman’s husband is slumped over in the seat.

Raymond lifts his head from against the steering wheel as blood drips down his face. When he gets his vision straight, he sees the damage he has caused. Ray leaves his vehicle and tries to free the trapped woman from her car. The harder he pulls on the door the more it refuses to corporate suddenly flames begin to surround the vehicle, and now desperation sets in. He is desperately trying to open the door, but the fire is engulfing the passengers. He could hear the sirens, and the police are on the way. Raymond was still trying to free the passengers without success.

The flames are burning so hot that it melts the exterior of the car. He rushes back to his vehicle and backs the car in the opposite direction, leaving the scene of the crime. Ray already decided that what just happen, was not his fault, and he was not going to prison for their stupidity.

He speeds down the highway on his way home. No one has to know he was the cause of the accident. He assures himself it was not his problem anyways. Raymond turns into his driveway, gets out and examines the damage to his vehicle and immediately calls Hartley and Joe to come over to help fix the damage. Mom was inside the house helping us children with our homework. She just made it home before Raymond still determined to leave him no matter what.

Hartley and Joe arrive a couple hours later the men are a little peeved that Raymond called but curiosity gets the better of them and they make an appearance. Hartley pounds loudly on the front door. Raymond rushes to answer, before he can welcome the men into his home. Hartley was running his mouth. You had better have a good reason for calling me over here. My old lady was bitching at me as soon as I walked in the door. Raymond has a sardonic smile on his face, he muses at the remark.

Hartley talks a lot of shit, but the truth of the matter is when it all comes down he jumps whenever his woman wants. What a coward. Ray answers the question.
