When the Wind Howls in New Directions - Ronda West

    Chapter One: Familiar Scents Arising

Susan Cabot was well aware that she was in a hospital and that there were many people surrounding her. She should feel at least partially safe but she did not. There was something that was bothering her, something her mind kept turning over and over like a smooth stone. It was there, just sitting at the edge of her subconscious and she wasn’t sure just yet if she wanted to mention it out loud because she wasn’t really sure if she knew what it meant.

She was also aware that she did not want to open her eyes because there would be questions and the overly concerned faces of strangers, pushed too close to hers for comfort, all of them smelling of their unique scents and all of them pushing this one subtle clue back further and further. Eventually it would be pushed back far enough and it would be lost to her forever.

The thing that made her slowly, cautiously open her eyes was the thought of Colton Pidcock. He had been in that room with her. Was he injured? She remembered that they brought in two gurneys but as she had struggled with the heavy darkness that was dragging her down she could not really recall if he had said anything. All that she did really remember about that man with any clarity was his strong hand, trembling as it held hers and how slowly it fell away from hers as they moved them apart.

She’s waking up! A voice, probably an intern from the youthful sound, alerted everyone. A new flurry of activity was set off and Susan was aware of a gathering group of shadows at her bedside. She winced as the first sliver of light stabbed at her eyes. She struggled one eye opened, looked around briefly and then allowed the second eye to open as well.

Now, Ms. Cabot, I want you to move slowly and take care. You’ve been through a very serious trauma and I don’t want you to exert yourself. Are you having any pain, dear?  The older doctor smiled gently.

For a brief second Susan smiled because she had heard reindeer but she quickly pushed the rising hysteria aside. No. I’m okay. She was horrified by how small her voice sounded, how weak and fragile she felt. Is Mr. Pidcock...is he okay, too?

The doctor smiled again and nodded. Mr. Pidcock is in the room just next door. He is doing fine as well and has been asking about you to anyone who pops in to his room. Even asked the janitor how you were. He made some notes on her chart and looked at a few of the machines that surrounded her. "Now, the police have been pacing a hole in my hallway out there wanting to talk to you. They have spoken
