Introduction
It Is Difficult to Talk with Our Kids About God
We read Bible stories to our children and we talk to them about God as part of each holiday season. We even teach them prayers and blessings that are addressed to God. But we often skip the fundamentals, hesitating to begin honest conversations about God because we have yet to replace our own outgrown metaphors. Our childhood images of God are no longer useful, yet we have not found meaningful alternatives. Children are not at all uncomfortable with God Talk.
They ask their innocent questions about everything in their world. It is we, the adults, who get bogged down with doubt and confusion. We ask ourselves: How can I speak for all of Judaism?
Am I even sure I believe in God after the Holocaust/AIDS?
"How can I put my spiritual life into
