    Kallie's Secret - Heather Mar-Gerrison

    Prologue

    Kallie

    Kallie?

I squeezed my eyes more tightly shut and tried my best to ignore my brother’s insistent voice, Oh go away. You’re interrupting my time with Josh.

I’d been having the best dream, too. Only it wasn’t really a dream. It was where I met my boyfriend.

Let me explain. Kyle, that was my brother, and I were a little different to the normal kids. We had ‘powers’ for want of a better description. Kyle’s were absolutely phenomenal. Mine? Not so great but both of us were pretty handy, one way or another and I was guessing my boyfriend also had powers, since we’d been meeting for months... in our dreams.

    Kallie!

Yeah? I replied stupidly. Well I was sleeping. It wasn’t always easy to distinguish between the spoken word and the one transmitted by mind…

I’m in your head, stupid. Wake up! My brother’s amused voice had me awake in seconds.

I sat up, instantly on my guard. Where are you?

He sounded relieved that I was finally back in the real world, I’m outside the window, waiting for you to open it so I can get past the Rottweilers at the gates.

I scrambled off my bed and headed for the window. I was a little reluctant to be awake. Joshua was the guy I met in my dreams and I was absolutely one thousand per cent in love with him. I smiled as I remembered his face when I had to leave. What, already? he asked, looking at me sorrowfully. His beautiful, big, brown eyes making me want to stay in my dream with him forever.

I nodded, Sorry. My brother needs me.

Back in the real world, I spoke to Kyle. I’m on it. He wasn’t actually talking about dogs. He was talking about our uncle’s minions. He liked to surround himself with heavies. He was one hell of a dodgy character...

Kyle shouldn’t have been out today. He’d done a run yesterday, but he’d left something behind that could have grave consequences if it was found, so he’d gone back for it. He knew it would be there, it was only minutes ago that the deal had been done – since he’d moved time and space... I know. Very weird. I’ll explain a bit more, in a minute.

As I imagine you’ve already worked out, we weren’t exactly your average teenagers. For one, we were forced to be drug runners by our less than charming uncle, Sheldon Hellmann. I wasn’t even sure if he was our real uncle. There was no family resemblance, at all – and Hellmann didn’t really care about us. Yes, he’d provided a roof over our heads and kept us fed and clothed, but he used our gifts mercilessly – particularly Kyle’s. The problem with Kyle’s gift was that it was so powerful, it physically drained him if it was overused. Since I’d started to blossom into a woman, Hellmann’s attitude towards me had changed and he was more protective of me than he used to be – and it seriously creeped me out. I tried my best to keep out of his way. Particularly when Kyle was on one of his runs. Being alone with Hellmann was quite literally hell.

So, this was our life as we knew it. We were always afraid that the police would track us down and that they wouldn’t believe that we were virtual prisoners. We were always afraid that other, even more sinister enemies of Hellmann might find out about us, too and we were also afraid that the normal humans would discover what we were and would want us destroyed...

I was assuming that Hellmann might be like us in that he had gifts, but if he did, I’d never seen him use them. I was guessing they were dark gifts. Heck, everything about him was dark and evil. I wouldn’t be half surprised if he got murdered one day. All of his acquaintances were just as shady as he was and honestly – he’d totally deserve it, too.

Still, I was glad he hadn’t seen fit to use any gifts on us yet. They really wouldn’t be welcome.

Hellmann... I’d always thought it was a good name for him. He deserved to burn in hell forever for his crimes against humanity.

My brother Kyle and I had been here since we were ten. We were both seventeen, now – or at least I thought we were. I didn’t actually remember how many years we’d been in hiding. It wasn’t a great life – but it was warm and relatively comfortable and we were fairly well paid – when we did a good job. And we did a good job. Particularly Kyle. He was amazing.

I was reasonably good at my craft – that was what I called my gift. I felt like a witch. I was able to manipulate minds, which was quite good fun, sometimes. The police officers would suddenly remember that they hadn’t finished their paperwork or they’d see that it wasn’t drugs being handed over in a deal, but a stack of school books being handed over from daughter to mother or father. I was good... but Kyle was incredible.

Kyle could travel through time and space. I know – weird right?

So, he would do the deal yesterday. That way, it was all over and done with before it had even happened. Cool huh?

It was exhausting for him though, it drained him almost completely and Hellmann didn’t care. He was the most heartless, soulless creature on the planet. I wished him dead all of the time – and I know that was an awful thing to wish – but you hadn’t seen him do what I’d seen. He was a cold-blooded murderer. He saw off his biggest rival a few weeks ago. Some guy called Chaplin, I think his name was – not that Chaplin wasn’t every bit as bad. I’d heard a rumour that he’d killed the woman Hellmann loved at one time. Whether it was true or not wasn’t something I really wanted to ask my uncle...

This was one of the problems for us – we saw things that we maybe shouldn’t. This wasn’t something we’d shared with any other people. We’d learned the hard way in life that you couldn’t trust anyone, anyway – and besides, most people thought we were freaky enough…

He climbed in through the window and collapsed on the floor at my feet.

I bit my lip. This was utterly ridiculous, if Hellmann kept pushing him beyond his capabilities he was going to die – and then I’d be left here with him alone, which I sometimes thought was what he wanted... I crouched down and stroked his cheek, Kyle, you need to sleep, I said softly, your nose is bleeding again. I pulled a tissue out of my pocket and dabbed his face.

He nodded, taking the tissue from my hand and pressing it against his nose, It’s fine, He said as I pulled him to his feet and supported him across the room. He collapsed onto his bed and closed his eyes. He grinned fleetingly and murmured to me, You’d best get back to your Josh time.

I smiled. Kyle knew all about my weird dreams about a guy I’d never met, Kyle?

He didn’t answer. He’d gone straight to sleep. I looked at him with a frown. He was absolutely exhausted. He had dark circles under his eyes, even in his sleep. It made me angry. I could just as easily do the deals that he did – and my gift was almost effortless. I needed to get him a day off. I braced myself to face Hellmann. I just hoped he was in a good mood…

    Chapter 1 – Changing places

    Kallie

Kallie, Hellmann was stood frowning down at me, You have requested a meeting with me. He sounded slightly incredulous. As if he wondered how I thought I had any right to ask…

I nodded, shaking in my shoes. He wasn’t going to like this, but I had to try to save my brother the exhaustion of yet another run.

I looked up at him trying to look as if I was confident to be stood there, Um, yes I did. It’s Kyle – he isn’t well. I’m offering to go in his place.

He laughed, a harsh bark of a laugh that sent shivers down my spine, "I beg your pardon, he asked, almost as if I was asking for the moon, you can’t pick and choose your missions, you know, he looked at me in amusement again, but with the usual edge of menace, I decide who they are distributed too – and I don’t want you going out endangering yourself."

I nodded, trying my best to look respectful. Inside though I was thinking of all sorts of ways in which I could get rid of him. Poison; a bullet; stabbed through the heart… Of course, I said, I know that, I attempted a winning smile, and of course I wouldn’t normally ask… but I really don’t think he’s well enough.

He narrowed his eyes and sniffed. Folding his arms across his chest he stared at me. I’d annoyed him. That much was glaringly obvious. "I will decide that." He snapped.

I hung my head. This guy was going to kill my brother if he wouldn’t let him rest. I vowed right there and then that if he did, I wouldn’t rest until I’d hunted him down and killed him in cold blood…

    Where is he? Hellmann asked.

I looked up, hope flaring in my chest, He’s sleeping. He’s upstairs.

He nodded curtly, Take me to him.

I turned on my heel and hurriedly led Hellmann to our room.

Opening the door, I peered across at where Kyle was still sleeping. He still looked awful. The dark
