Serving the Parisian Billionaire - Jenna Powers

    Powers

Jane stared at the slow moving carousel with random pieces of luggage lounging around.  None of the black bags were mine, sending a slight bit of disappointment through her.  Jane looked around at the other passengers who had flown in with her, barely recognizing the couple that had sat in front of me.  She was tired, hungry and ready to get to the hotel.  All that stood before her was this damned carousel, slowly spinning in circles.

Were you on Flight 158?  A man asked as he tapped her shoulder.

Jane turned and nodded.  You too?

The man’s lips curled upward, a forced smile on his rugged face.  Yes.  Every damn time.  I swear, I think I’ve lost more clothes in Paris than in any other city.  He grunted as he crossed his arms.

    That bad huh?  Jane asked.

The man shrugged.  Maybe it’s just me.  Name’s Bertrand.  He said as he stuck out his hand.

Jane shook his hand as she finally noticed his Parisian accent.  Jane.  Are you from here?

He nodded.  Yes.  My boss flies from Paris to Asia quite often.  He gets first class of course while I sit around in some damn economy class shit box.

Jane laughed.  You’re English is spot on.  I wouldn’t have known.

Only the best for Monsieur Pierre Decaux.  I lived in the U.S. for a decade before he accepted me into his program as his errand boy.  Bertrand replied with an edge of anger in his voice.

    Errand boy?

I guess my official title is Executive Assistant.  Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth all the money and travel I get.  He answered.

Jane nodded.  The way he pronounced Pierre’s name sent shivers down her spine.  She had always found the French language fascinating.

I know how you feel.  I’m supposed to be a consultant, but all I seem to do is get coffee for the partner.  Jane agreed.

Bertrand smiled, this time looking a bit more sincere.  Are you the fresh blood?

Jane nodded again as her eyes darted around the carousel.  Yeah.  New graduate, used to intern here and they really liked the way I make coffee I guess.

Bertrand broke out into a laugh, a deep bellowing sound emitting from his small gut.  I’ll have to try it sometime.

Jane smiled back at Bertrand.  Well... I am here for a month.  Maybe two, depending on how long the partner decides.  She joked.

Bertrand nodded and headed closer to the carousel, his eyes locked on a large black bag.  He pulled it off and checked the tag, making sure it was his bag.

It was nice to have met you.  Au revoir.  He said as he turned.

It was nice meeting you as well.  Good bye!  Jane replied as she kept her eyes on the luggage slowly spitting out from the abyss.

Her heart sank as she didn’t see her bag with the next batch of luggage.  Her first time in Paris and now she was stuck at the airport, wondering where her luggage was.  She sighed and looked to the side, looking for a seat.  She wandered off and sat on a cold metal chair.

Time seemed to pass by slowly as she watched people hug, smile and gather their belongings.  The cold steel carousel continued to spin, mocking her with a few remaining bags.  None of which were hers.  Her phone vibrated, indicating that it was soon out of battery, adding to her frustration.  As the last couple of bags were picked up, the spinning black mass stopped.  Jane stood up and walked back to the carousel, checking and double checking for her luggage.  She sighed and headed towards the customer service area to see if they had her bags.

Bon jour.  The young French man behind the counter greeted.

Hi.  My bags haven’t come out yet.  Jane informed.

    Flight number?

    Number 158.

The man tapped on his keyboard and squinted at his small black and green monitor.  He nodded and pointed at the carousel she had just come from.

    Carousel number 32.  He said.

I know, that’s where I just was.  My bags aren’t coming out though.  Jane replied.

    Oh.  Lost luggage?
