Trevon Carter

My name is Trevon Carter and I’m just a simple black man that likes to listen to stories and write. I’ve never been much in the educated side of the house but writing has always been something I’d enjoyed. Growing up in the projects, I’d always been told that I’d end up dead or on the streets killing, but I managed to get out of that world. After getting out of school, moving, and striving for a better life, I’ve found out that being a black man definitely has its advantages, especially in bed.

Brooke jolted awake and reached under her cot to grab her pistol. Her heart raced as her eyes danced around the dark empty warehouse. She had barely been able to get any sleep, afraid that Lamar and Marcus’ men were going to burst in at any time. After scanning the large room slowly, she lowered her gun and lay back again.

She gritted her teeth as she thought about her old partner, Jake. He had apparently ratted her out, along with Captain Bolt and her small support team. She wondered if the IT guy, Roberto, was still safe. The best couple of days had been a whirlwind of emotions.

The warehouse had tiny windows near the top of the wall which barely let any sunlight in. She glanced at her watch; it was almost time for the library to open. Roberto had sent her a file with everything the team had on the Deputy Colonel, the man most likely behind the raid on her team.

Damn bastards… You want me to be a criminal? I’ll be your fucking criminal, Brooke whispered angrily as she stood up.

While Captain Bolt had stockpiled the warehouse pretty decently, with food, water and supplies, including a handful of weapons; she wasn’t sure how long the safe house's location would be secret. The computer they had left unfortunately didn’t have an internet connection. She sighed as she grabbed two pistols. After holstering them, she put on a long coat to cover her weapons and headed out.

As soon as she opened the door, a burst of cold air blasted by her. She shivered and held her coat together tightly as she looked around. The warehouse had been surprisingly well sealed and warm, considering how cold it was outside. The closest library was the Jamaica Bay Library which was still quite a while away. She’d have to transfer through a couple of local buses.

Even in broad daylight she felt unsafe. Lamar and Marcus had a tight grip over Brooklyn, but they also now had the help of the NYPD. She had pulled her hair down, covering as much of her face as possible. Unfortunately Captain Bolt had not left her with a scarf or anything to cover her face with. For now, she’d have to use her hair and her coat.

A stray dog wandered by in front of her, briefly pausing to look her over and growling before jolting off. She sighed and headed towards the nearest station. On her walk, she walked by a gas station and paused as she saw her picture on the newspaper. Her heart jumped to her throat as she read the headline.

Drug addict injures NYPD… She whispered.

Her fear immediately turned to anger as she read through the first couple paragraphs on the front page. The paper didn’t disclose who in the NYPD had been injured but it mentioned that she was dangerous and most likely armed. At the very least, Captain Bolt and her crew were part of the Jersey police force, so they were most likely safe, meaning that they had to have fabricated the injuries.

Motherfuckers… She continued as she clenched her fists tightly.

The rest of the story continued on in a page she could not get to. She contemplated breaking the flimsy glass pane but ultimate decided against it. The last thing she wanted was more attention on her. But now, with her face plastered on the front page, she needed something to cover her face for certain.

Her thoughts were interrupted as soon as she saw a bus stop near her station. She jogged over and pulled some change out of her pocket. The driver impatiently tapped his foot as he watched her board and take a seat.

She glanced back to see a homeless man sleeping in the seat closest to the rear exit. He had a hiking bag next to him and atop it was an old baseball cap. She made a mental note of it as the bus continued on towards its next stop.

Brooke sighed as she saw her exit come up. She stood up and headed to the back, eyeing the knocked out homeless man. He reeked of alcohol. Once the bus stopped, she quickly reached over, grabbed his cap and stepped out of the bus. After it drove off, she put the cap on her head and sighed as the smell of alcohol immediately ran by her.

Why did he have to be a drunk, Brooke muttered as she pulled the cap down tightly and walked down a couple of blocks.

Every time a car with its music turned up drove by, she flinched and instinctively reached toward her gun. Anyone in these neighborhoods could have been a member of Lamar’s crew. She sped up her pace as soon as she saw her other bus.

Brooke glanced left and right as she logged into a computer. The library was only one in name. Loud kids shouted and ran around with single mothers loudly yelling or chatting in the background. She clicked on her drafts, recalling what Roberto had told her about keeping their messages safe.

Instead of actually sending an email to her address, he would log in and compose a message. Once he was done, he’d save it and logout. There was no trail for
