    The Great Man

    John Williams was flying back from his company's convention where he had been fired. He was sitting in coach feeling the weight of his life pressing down on him, his mind adding up his charge card bills, the rent, and the alimony. He was so far behind on everything he was drowning and now he had to look for a job. He hated looking for a job, the endless interviews, filling out mind numbing resumes, the waiting for the phone call that never came. Suddenly he breathed in honeysuckle perfume and turned to see the pretty redhead stewardess smiling down at him.

    Yes? he said.

    Mr. Williams, we've just received a message for you, she said, her pink mouth smiling, the big blue eyes eating him up. On her nametag: Mary.

    For me?

    You've just been named: Man of the Year.

    You sure you mean me? he said, knowing she had confused him with someone else.

    I'm positive, she said and escorted him to a first class seat as if it was an honor to wait on him. Everyone is so proud of you.
